Taste and smell of diluted NaGHB

Someone who isn't me has sucessfully used the substantial information on this site to convert GBL to GHB on numerous occasions (using this tek: http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=63195). Swim said the results seem to be perfect, and give the desired effects. Once mixed the solution was heated till molten at 150-170C until all bubbles stopped being produced when stirred and the liquid was slightly viscous, to ensure a full reaction. It gave a ph of 7.8 and has no visual or textural impurities inside it, and swim decided on a 3ml = 1gram of GHB concentration.

The one thing I noticed is that people have said that:

If it tastes like rocket fuel than you don't have GHB, you probably have GBL floating in a watery NaOH solution - not nice.

Whilst GBL is a solvent and Sodium Hydroxide is a caustic alkali the end product of this reaction (NaGHB) is a perfectly stable, slightly alkali substance able to be stored safely in most types of containers.

This recipe creates tasteless (when added to cold water) and odourless GHB

Now while swims end product does certainly not taste strong, or like rocket fuel, it is certainly not odourless or neutral on the tastebuds. If a drop of the pure solution is dabbed on the tongue, its a very strong salty taste, and if added to water it tastes slightly salty, though not unbearably so. Also the pure NaGHB solution has a definate salty smell to it.

Is this is whats to be expected? So the above statement is slightly misleading? (unless I've misinterpretted it)

Re: Taste and smell of diluted NaGHB

It does taste salty, but with sufficient dilution is nigh on undetectable. At 1g/3mL it WILL taste salty

The powder on it's own is awful if put straight into the mouth, SWIM would know, he's just whipped up a batch!

Re: Taste and smell of diluted NaGHB

Salt is as salt does.

If one were to pour table salt on one's tongue it would taste pretty damn awful.

The GHB molecule is bound with the Sodium i.e. salt. Otherwise it is too unstable and would revert back to GBL.

So, therefore, undiluted NaGHB would likely taste equally as bad, not for the GHB but for the sodium. The idea of diluting table salt to the point that it is not unpleasant to drink applies to NaGHB. A strong dilution would likely have a strong salt flavour, a weak dilution not.

Putting some salt in a flavoured drink makes a big difference to the taste of that drink.

Putting some salt in a tall glass of cold water leaves very little salinity.

This is what I thought, but was rather confused by this comment in the extraction teks thread

Stop quoting me from a different thread. That was in relation to using POTASSIUM hydroxide instead of Sodium hydroxide. In that case there would be no sodium, there would be potassium The Na does indeed stand for sodium
