Drug info - Fentanyl patch before bed?

SWIM's cat got a patch the other day for the second time in his life. The first time he got one he wore it for 5 hrs and was really disappointed and just ate half the gel over the course of a day then smoked the rest.

This one is 100mcg/hr 10mg total... cant remember the dosage of the first one (was really young). Now he's heard that it could take 12hrs to kick in full-blown opiate effects and wants to know if it's safe to take before bed and hope that it's working when he wakes up? (avg 7-9hr sleep) just doesnt want to not wake up.

Hes blown whole OC 80's with no tolerance and uses oxy on a weekly basis at minimum.

Also, with normally blowing 40mg oxy when he wants to get itchy would leaving it on be what he wants or would it be more efficient to smoke it?
