can swimmers recomend a good antihistamine?

Hi,. Swim is on methadone and at times its hard for him to sleep at night so swim was thinking of trying an anti-histamine because he will not take the bennies. Swim does NOT want to feel any mind altering effects he just wants sleepies. is benadryl a good choise or are there better ones.

Re: can swimmers recomend a good antihistamine?

Benadryl is fine as long as you stick with 25-50 mg. Anymore than that and you risk deleriant effects, which swim imagines wouldn't be what you are looking for.

There is a prescription antiH called.. Vistaril i think, that is used as a sedative and for sleep, and is non addictive. You may want to look into that as well.

Re: can swimmers recomend a good antihistamine?

Yes.Swimbowz is correct with the Vistaril[hydroxyzine]suppose to have sedating effects.Swim thinks otc Zyrtec is about the same as Vistaril. There is also Trazodone, may be an antidepressant?Good luck and hopefully goodnight.o

Re: can swimmers recomend a good antihistamine?

Swim agrees, Hydroxyzine is the way to go. It is metabolized into Zyrtec (cetiriziene), which interestingly, affects the action of hydroxyzine. Hydroxyzine is routinely prescribed for anxiety, but doesn't have the CNS effects that benzodiazepines like diazepam (Valium) or alprazolam (Xanax) has. Anyways, a dose of Zyrtec before Hydroxyzine takes away effects; but Hydroxyzine is a pro-drug of Zyrtec. Go figure.

But anyways, Hydroxyzine is a little gem of an antihistamine!

Benadryl is the weapon of choice and you can safely take up to 100 mg without getting "delirious." It is not really the greatest sleep aid but it's all you can get over the counter aside from some herbal stuff, which might actually be more effective.

Re: can swimmers recommend a good antihistamine?

My friend recommends Trazodone (Non habit forming, but a scrip is needed). It works great @ 150gs but can be taken up to 300 mgs at the direction of a physician. For Dave 150mgs got him approx. 4-4 1/2 hrs good rem sleep,At 200 mgs he slept his normal 6 1/2 hours. He had no hangover as he did with some other sleep aids.

Good luck good thoughts

Swim has tried Trazadone in the past Once. He got a good nights sleep and woke up the next day feeling a rather good glow. Swim wonders why he never continued using them. Swim got a script for the Hydroxzyne. Tried 25mg last night. some mild effects. will try for maybe 50mg tonight and see how that feels as that most likely would be a better as well as more recomended dose for swim.

Re: can swimmers recomend a good antihistamine?

Just want to point out, ESP. with hydroxyzine, that antihistamines are sometimes given to potentiate the effects of opiates. So, if SWIY is on methadone, keep that a consideration. I haven't read any clinical info about hydroxyzine having a 10 day ceiling, but I do know if you combine Zyrtec and Hydroxyzine, hydroxyzine loses a lot of it's calming/sedating effects.

Re: can swimmers recomend a good antihistamine?

promethazine really helped swim when she detoxed from methadone.

doctors generally dont mind giving you an injection in the butt with it either. its pretty harmless, tablets can be bought over the counter in the chemist, etc.

Re: can swimmers recomend a good antihistamine?

OK, OK, listen to me and DEFINITELY DON'T listen to some of these responses from people who obviously don't know what they are talking about. (not naming names, just be careful)

Heres the deal: My fish is currently on 105mg of methadone (i hate when people call it meth) and does use antihistamines periodically for sleep aid. It works very well for him as long as he keeps the dosage low (usually only 25 mg, sometimes 50) Higher dosages give him nightmares and extreme grogginess upon awakening. He doesn't do use it more than a day or two in a row, since the antihistamines actually increase the effects of his methadone dosage, resulting in reduced effectiveness of the methadone when usage of the antihistamine is ceased. This results in his waking up early withdrawing (only slightly) and losing the sleep he had been taking the antihistamine for in the first place.

It is also important to note that when he stays awake to experience it, the antihistamines induce some delerium effects at extremely lower dosages when combined with his methadone dosages. (so forget about the 100mgs being safe for sure comment) He actually started losing it a bit at a very modest 50mg dosage one time when he dosed the antihistamine before his methadone dosage. Nothing too serious, just a bit of nonsense talk, kind of like sleep talking but awake. (he was actually trying to potentiate this time)

nateup added 1 Minutes and 28 Seconds later...

oh yeah and to answer the original question, he prefers promethazine or benydrill
