can swimmers recomend a good antihistamine for sleep?

Hi,. Swim is on methadone and at times its hard for him to sleep at night so swim was thinking of trying an anti-histamine because he will not take the bennies. Swim doesn't want to feel any mind altering effects he just wants sleepies. is benadryl a good choise or are there better ones.

Re: can swimmers recomend a good antihistamine?

Could have swore swim just answered this thread somewhere else...

benadryl is the obvious choice, stick to no more than 50 mg though or you risk deleriant effects. Which, swim can tell you, aren't exactly fun.

Another is Vistaril, which requires a prescription, but is non addictive and sedating. Its actually used for anxiety and sleeplessness in people who are comprimised as far as benzos go.

Re: can swimmers recomend a good antihistamine?

Even 50mg diph can induce slight deleriant/unpleasantly stimulant effects sometimes so if plain sleep is what Swiy is after he could start with 25mg and see how it fares. Promethazine would likely work better but in the US it's Pr only.

Swim is unfamiliar with Vistaril but if it's like the poster above describes it certainly sounds like an interesting option

a small dose of chlorpheniramine maleate can produce drowsiness, but is not marketed as a sleep aid as it doesn't affect everyone the same way as diph does

Re: can swimmers recomend a good antihistamine?

Diphenhydramine Hcl i.e. Benadryl (at least in the U.s.) is probably a good starting point anyway to see if it works for you. Diphenhydramine is also what is in many OTC sleeping aids.

One 25mg tablet makes swim pretty sleepy after about 45 minutes. Also halving the tablets can work if you want say a bit more than one but not two tablets. Just down the halved tablet quick because it is very bitter.

Swim really liked the Benadryl fast disolving strips, but hasn't seen them anymore and thinks maybe they have been discontinued.

Johan73 added 0 Minutes and 37 Seconds later...

Swim meant to say swiy up above, not 'you' sorry.
