LOL man we seem to have a similar taste in books. When i was growing up LOTR and Neuromanser were my bible.Ive read a lot of brooks, and other fantasy authors when i was younger, and the only drug ive known was pot,so i would lock myself for hrs in my room, and just get lost in their worlds

and i got hooked on pratchett a few yrs ago,too...he is a great writer, and the first one ive read who based almost his entire work on sarcasm, irony and critique of the modern society, imho atleast. it seems to me that every discworld book(and ive read them all,cos they go so well with weed) has some underlined criticism of our society,or am i imagining things?take jingo or small gods for an example

PS i hated the lotr movie, its a corruption of tolkiens workEdited by: daeron

A great book which I think everyone should read is "The Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are" by Alan watts

Or anything by him actually, he's one of my favorite philosophers.

Wow this thread grew fast. Kings older stuff is alot better i find, and tho he is known for his novels i really enjoy his short stories. My all time favorite was "Survivor Type" about the heroin smuggler who was trapped alone on the desert island after his boat sank/plane crashed(i forget which lol). He just wandered around getting high and eventually started eatin his own leg cuz he got so hungry. Man it really got into this guys mind though.

The smut talk made we want to mention Henry Miller. Theres some smut that brings you closer to the story lol

Yeah Kings short storys are great. I like the one in "Everythings
Eventual" about the writer who wants to stay in the hotel room for one
of his books and gets way more than he expeected. Creeped me right out.

Never read any Henry Miller. Could you name a few titles?

How about kids books, I really enjoyed "The Outsiders" forget the author bit it was a good read.

Millers best know works are Tropic of Cancer, and Tropic of Capricorn, and His Trililogy of books Called Sexus. Or that was one of the books in the trilogy, i forget, ive only read the two Tropic books from page to page. But ya look into it, cool stuff. He was an interesting guy to say the least.

Oh ya and for a kids book, pick up " The Wind in the Willows". Shit i forget the auther. Anyway the 5th or 6th chapter is called "the Piper at the Gates of Dawn" which is what Syd Barrett titled the very first, and most psydelic musical peice ever created, Pink Floyd album.Edited by: motorhead

im surprised your willing to admit to reading pratchett if your a fantasy fan! haha. all my mates seem to be into fantasy, but they all hate pratchett. i think hes amazing, by far the best author ive ever read. and his novels just get better and better! and i agree totally that many of them, especially the more recent ones, do seem to be quite critical of aspects of our society and the people in it.

dont worry... i got books 1-4 from the library when number 4 came out, but that was many years ago. so when they were rereleased on paperback, along with books 5 and 6 (the final book isnt out on paperback here yet) i bought them all and read them. well, read 1-5 anyway. im really looking forward to 6 and 7, i cant wait to see how it ends.

i do agree too that some of the content is a bit graphic, but i dont think it should be any other way really. books should be graphic, they shouldnt skip around parts that may make us feel uncomfortable.

lol, yeah why not!when i was younger i was completely hooked on fantasy&sci fi,but apart from a few exceptions the majority of fantasy authors havebrought themselves in somekind of copy&paste/repetitive cycles(again i repeat apart for the exceptions).Pratchett is just a great writer, and you cant hate him if he makes fun of some other authors you like

Ah poetry, havent read any in a long time, but i used to read alot of it. Plath has some interesting dark stuff. Emily Dickinsons poetry was far out and i used to enjoy it. Deep stuff for a shut-in. I liked alot of female poets actually, was it Anne Sexton? and their was another, Rich was her last name i think. Man long time since i read this stuff.

Some of my other favs were Leonard Cohen, Allan Ginsburg,.....shit so many, i cant believe im forgetting all the names lol. I really thought jim morrison had a way with words although he was never taken seriously. And i went through a romantic phase when all i read was Coleridge, shelly, Lord byron and all that older stuff. Rhime of the Ancient Mariner, Ode to the West wind,.... i should go to the old used book store sometime. I used to have so many books years ago it wasnt funny.
