Opinions - Phazes next extraction.. Discussion.

As many of you may already know phazes interest in marijuana goes beyond just smoking it. He has been learning about cannabis by self teaching and the internet for many years now. He has learned a lot, and using his knowledge he knows many different ways of extraction. But he thinks its time to try the most simplest. Alcohol.

He has planned to do this using 32oz of 91% isopryl alcohol, a 1.5 liter (6 cup) pryex storage container and 14 grams of cannabis.

His plans are to grind the cannabis up almost into powder. Put it into the pryex dish and pour in the alcohol. Put the lid on it and store in a dresser drawer for the light and shake it around once a day for 2 weeks.

He hasn't planned on how to strain it yet, but his plans after the 2 weeks and straining is to leave it in the dresser drawer with the lid off so the alcohol can evaporate. Maybe pouring the solution into a gatorade bottle and covering the top with cheese cloth and then squeezing it with his hands when its all gone. He has used a drawer for many alcohol extractions, this is just his first experience using raw cannabis buds. Ironically.

SWIM likes this idea but imagines SWIPhaze will enjoy the results even more.

The only thing SWIM sees a potential issue with is that by almost powdering the bud whatever SWIY uses to do this will be caked in the oily goodies SWIY wants in their extract. So make sure said powdering device is easily dismantled and cleaned. Out of interest how is SWIPhaze planning to powder their weed.


SWIM once many moons ago tried to use a peppercorn grinder to grind his weed, it took ages but resulted in a nicely milled product. When it came time to smoke it its potency seemed very disappointing, SWIM was troubled by this and confused. Some months later he took the grinder apart for another project and discovered his mistake, the grindy bit was completely clogged with thick resinous oil. SWIM tried to smoke it but alas it had been sitting in the light by a radiator in the mean time and so had degraded beyond use.

Hope Phaze can upload some pictures of oil when this is done, its the one thing sure to get SWIM dribbling on his keyboard!

^ swim has done process very similair to this with OK results. his main issue is the product is usually very oily and sticky and difficult to work with. Is this for stems or buds? Usully the end product has to have somethign try added to give it a more tarry consistency. swim has added flour and ground weed very fine for this in the past. im startign to think of trying to de-fat using a solvent. like while its in the alcohol, you could remove alot of the oily things that damage your end product. you would also make the total evaperation yelid a smaller amount though to lsoe of those oils. the good side tho is that it would be more concentrated than leaving the oils in, same thc as before but on a smaller surface area. The only isssue is hes unsure of THC's solubility in the solvents like naptha. it may migreate to that if you add it resulting in a totally screwed xtraction. ANyone know THC solubility in other organic solvents?

Phaze will be using buds ofcourse. He already knows what the end of the extraction should look like. The same as any extraction of cannabinoids, like a honey oil orange sticky goo that cant be handled. So his plans for this is after evaporation has completed he is going to scrape the entire inside of the pyrex dish and try to pile it up in the middle of the dish. This way it can be put ontop of a bowl of weed, perhaps this banana kush hes been smoking. He will put the lid back on it and store it in the drawer. And to get some ontop of a bowl of weed he will use a razor, or a cuticle cleaner.

Here are some pictures that phaze already had uploaded to the df server. His grinder is a unique grinder. Looks pretty simple but compared to other grinders weighs like 4 times the ammount. He payed close to 100 dollars for this grinder and man it was worth it. about 3 rotations and the weed will grind down to perfect joint rolling quality. around 6 rotations and its about powdered. it has shark teeth and does better than a space case IMO. Phaze doesnt approve of the way a space case works and prefers his model over any that he has seen to date.







He has everything worked out up until the part of actually seperating the weed from the alcohol. After the solution sits sealed for however long he decides to let it stay before he lets it sit and evaporate he has to transfer it to another container and back into the pyrex dish to evaporate. This is when the seperation will take place, before it goes back into the pyrex dish. Some creative ideas or introspect would really be appreciated there.

The rest is easy.

to seperate the weed from the alcohol jsut use any filter with a mesh smaller than the pot particulates. and for extracton of the THC sswim would say 7-10 days is plenty.
