Effects - Certain strains better for pain?

SWIM has had chronic back pain problems since he was about 15 (he is now 19). Sometimes it is non-existant, sometimes tolerable, but majority of the time his back is in extreme pain. He finds that sometimes, when he smokes, weed actually makes his back hurt WORSE. Could this be because SWIM typically enjoys the "head high (Sativa?)" type of weed for creativity more than the "body high(Indica I believe)?" He wants to get his cannabis card for this issue, and although mainly for recreational use, he was wondering if certain strains would help this issue and other strains might hurt?
