Bong Water below 32 degrees

Our stoner friend's friend's friend (seriously!) made a discovery after a science class one day. He learned that salt water has a lower freezing point than regular water and so whipped up a jar of salt water and stuck it in his freezer. Apparently (fourthhand knowledge, untested) it remained liquid and when poured into a water pipe did not affect the taste of the smoke at all but created the smoothest hit that the FOAFF(F?) had ever had.

We could not find any other posts dealing with this subject, has anyone else heard a similar story and care to share?

Re: Bong Water below 32 degrees

SWIM generally leaves her bong in the refrigerator, as indeed cold water (salt is NOT necessary) does give a smoother hit. Add ice cubes as well, just be careful if it's glass, as your stem can and will break (SWIM knows, knows that having to leave to go to the Head Shop for a new stem sucks).
SWIM never got into it, but a lot of people will put liquor like Rum or Whiskey for the water, just for the flavor. SWIM personally only buys the good stuff, so has no need to waste alcohol to make it taste better. No, this method will not get you drunk, it's for flavor purposes only.
Rubbing Alcohol and salt should be used for cleaning. Don't let the Head Shops fool you into buying their "bong cleaner", it's expensive and while most work fine, rubbing alcohol and salt are way cheaper and do the job just as well, if not better.
SWIM has been a daily smoker for well over 10 years, SWIM knows her smoking devices well!
Simple water and ice cubes work just great, SWIM says leave the salt out altogether, unless you are doing a bong clean as SWIM suggested. SWIM usually puts in cubes up to where she would fill the water, then adds the water, only to that line. So more ice than water, as the cubes melt fast, this way you can take more hits before having to refresh the water!
Hope this helps, SWIM would be happy to help with any other questions about smoking, OP seems to be a newbie to smoking! His friend too!

Re: Bong Water below 32 degrees

One other thing a swimmer can do is pack the bong with snow and not water. Not too tightly packed though. It does not bubble but the smoke comes up through the snow like a mist in a way.

SWIM lives where when and if it snows, it's melted in minutes. SWIM will have to stick with man-made ice cubes! lol SWIM loves the idea though!

Re: Bong Water below 32 degrees

Salt water is used in ice cream production (at least, homemade ice cream production) for that very reason.

I'm sure I heard potassium permanganate solution had a particularly low freezing point, but I've not found anything in the 30s I spent looking. This is something I shall research further.

Re: Bong Water below 32 degrees

Swim and his friend took a walk one time last month and it was the coldest night of the year. Swim and his friend began smoking when SWIM noticed that the bongwater had a icy covering to the top of it... being a waterbottle bong, this didn't concern either of them. Both Swim and his friend hit it until the water was nearly completely solid with ice (except for a small hole and a little area where the heat and bubbles were keeping it water), those hits where very smooth and provided a nice clean smoke. I have also been wondering about this, good times.

Re: Bong Water below 32 degrees

SWIM was considering taking ice cube bongs to the next level of smooth and customizing his ice cube tray to make the cubes have a few holes running through them - so that the smoke runs through the center of the ice cooling it further.

As for the salt water having a lower freezing point, it does... 35g of salt in a liter of water will reduce the freezing point to -1.9C technically allowing you to filter your smoke though sub zero water. SWIM cant vouch for how this will taste, although SWIOP did say that the taste didn't change.

SWIM must say that that all these little changes are probably providing a negligible difference in smoke temperature, but its geeky and SWIM likes it. Happy questing for the smoothest smoke out there swimmers

Re: Bong Water below 32 degrees

Although the salt idea does work, tell SWIM to not do it too much because the salt causes corrosion on the glass of the bong, and also it can hurt his lungs hardcore when it filters through the saltwater(similar to drinking saltwater, leads to dehydration).

Quick Uber Tip: Never use a sugary liquid, like soda, to smoke with, cuz it kills alot of the potency in the smoke, leading to shit hits.

If that were the case then everyone living next to the sea would be in hospital by now considering that salt water is actually vaporised by the wind and this enters the lungs "hardcore".

Any salt that does make it into your lungs from the bong will simply get absorbed by the circulatory system and then excreted through your kidneys. Salt water in SWIY's bong won't be any worse than a walk along the coast, and SWIM would go so far to say it would be more pleasurable as well!

Further salt water does not corrode glass, perhaps SWIY might get scratches on it due to the undissolved salt due to oversaturation. If anything its likely to corrode the bowl itself, but having so much salt in there would be a retarded thing in the first place.

PS: Oh SWIM miss the days of the loop 'o Henle

Re: Bong Water below 32 degrees

the difference is very little, salt water's freezing point is -2 °C, only 2 graus less than that of normal water, maybe it makes some difference but it would be too slight I guess.

For what it's worth, people I have met won't use salt to clean their glass. They claim that it thins out the glass over time. I wouldn't trust a RooR or some similarly nice piece of glass with salt myself.

Well, realize you're basing it on pure superstition with no basis in fact whatsoever.

Salt does not and cannot thin/scratch/damage glass in any way.

Re: Bong Water below 32 degrees

^^WTF are you talking about. Since when does salt corrode glass? And, how does the salt that doesn't even touch your lungs if it was in the water create a health problem? I'm not following, seems rediculous.

Re: Bong Water below 32 degrees

Salt does not cause corrosion of glass, and it will not dehydrate you unless you're inhaling with the force of a hurricane and you actually manage to get some salt water in you.

Re: Bong Water below 32 degrees

Salt water dehydrates you because your loops o' Henle in your kidney can only concentrate liquid to 1400 osmol. Drink anything more concentrated than that, and your body will have to dilute it with other liquid already inside you in order to excrete the excess salt, leading to dehydration.

Salt water in your lungs would do little to dehydrate you.

Re: Bong Water below 32 degrees

As soon as Cowboy has the chance, he will try some bong hits using cold water with and without salt. This is similar to what Cowboy himself noticed this morning: if you leave weed in a damp/wet environment for an extended period of time, without letting the weed itself get wet, the little bit of moisture makes for a smoother hit when put in Cowboy's vapouriser or any other smoking device. For obvious reasons, though, one should make sure that is is still dry enough to smoke.
