USA - Teen Party Leads To Felony Drug, Other Violations

MOUNT AIRY - Ten people, including three juveniles, are facing drug, alcohol and other charges after members of the Mount Airy Police Department raided a party at a local home during the weekend.



Officer R.B. Davis received information that teen-agers had been gathering for parties at a residence at 912 Reeves Drive on weekends, with drinking and drugs said to be common at the parties.

This led to Davis and Officer L.T. Whitaker going to the residence during the early morning hours Saturday and finding several vehicles in the driveway. The officers also said they could hear music and laughter from the inside.

After knocking on the door and speaking with resident John Eric Vernon, 22, police allegedly witnessed open containers of alcohol and several persons who appeared to be under age 21. The officers stepped inside the home and found that several of the youths had been drinking, while also noticing the smell of burned marijuana.

Police then secured the residence and applied for a search warrant, which later was granted and executed for the home and vehicles of party-goers. This resulted in the alleged discovery of a small marijuana-growing operation in a closet along with a small quantity of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
As a result of the investigation, Vernon was charged with two felonies, manufacturing marijuana and maintaining a drug dwelling, six misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of drug paraphernalia, also a misdemeanor.
Vernon subsequently was jailed under a $3,000 secured bond.
Also charged were:

Ethan McKinley Cook, 18, of 758 Lakeview Drive, Dobson, with possession of marijuana after police searched his vehicle and allegedly found a small quantity of a controlled substance;

Christopher Jordan Wright, 18, of 196 Louise Ave., Mount Airy, with possession of marijuana, after officers searched his vehicle and allegedly discovered a small quantity of a controlled substance;

Fernando Miguel Carreon, 21, of 1056 Holly Springs Road, Mount Airy, whose vehicle was searched, leading to a small quantity of a controlled substance allegedly being found. He is charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia;

Victor Shane Carreon, 19, Fernando Miguel Carreon’s brother, also of 1056 Holly Springs Road, Mount Airy, consumption of alcohol by a person under 21;

Matthew Doyle Burke, 18, of 191 Airview Drive, Mount Airy, whose vehicle was searched and a small quantity of a controlled substance allegedly found. Burke was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia;

Melissa Nicole Yandell, 18, of 177 Goliath Lane, Mount Airy, consumption of alcohol by a person under 21.
Cook, Wright, the Carreons, Burke and Yandell were all released. Those defendants, as well as Vernon, are scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on April 1.
Three juveniles, ages 14 to 15, who allegedly were found in possession of marijuana at the party, will be turned over to the juvenile court system, police said.
