Can it be done the first time?

My friend Dave has successfully stopped his opiate use for 3 months.This is the first time that he really tried to quit.From reading others stories he wonders if anyone here was successful on their first attempt to quit?

Right now he's as well as can be expected,but wonders what he's in for down the road.He had to plan in advance to avoid any potential fuck ups,but wonders what to expect in the coming months.He's certainly afraid to let his guard down now, but doe's it get easier?

IS relapse a part of recovery?

My advice for Dave would be one day at a time is the only way to think for now,,,, I am in no real position to advice more than that....

One thing Dave needs to be on the lookout for is overconfidence as this has gotten Red Rock several times in the past. One should feel confident in their sobriety but not to the point that they feel invincibile and they can handle anything

Nashman, Relapse does not HAVE to be a part of recovery. accepting that before the fact is possibally setting SWIYself up for failure. IF relapse happens, however, it's best to accept it and move on, rather than beating oneself up.

RedRock speaks the truth. Overconfidence got SWIM after 2 years clean of heroin/speedballs/methadone/methadone/methadone/suboxone and lead to 3 more years of suboxone/heroin/suboxone/heroin/methadone.... It's no fun, and it was 100% because of complacancy, lack of active participation in my recovery, plus thinking SWIM could use drugs other than pot and alcohol in moderation [excessive boozing was part of what lead to relapse] i.e. SWIM began using lots of free prescription speed, lots of booze to temer the speed, lead to heroin use as soon as SWIM could get a connect. SWIM then ended up connecting with his old dealer from years ago, got scared, and on suboxone. But instead of getting off within 3 months or so as he did previously, SWIM continued to do heroin, used suboxone to keep well etc and lead eventually right back to the bad place, and all the while SWIM told SWIMself he was in recovery cuz of the suboxone. sick, I say......

swim wants to say, that they were only successful in getting/staying clean when they didnt use it again.

once you make that decision, and accept the finality of the decision, then addiction to opiates will never again be of bother to you.

3.5 years for swim and counting.

Rok should ask Dave if he wants to do the last 3 months again?Don't think Dave would like that.Maybe Rok needs to give Dave a smack in the head to keep him straight.Swims only 1 month behind Dave and hasn't forgotten what has happened.Doesn't seem like a tough decision for Dave to make.This battle should be easily won.Gotta keep the fight.Best.o

In no way is Dave planning to relapse(after all the shit he's been through).He is curious if anyone had succeeded on their first attempt to quit junk,thats all.He's also heard the bullshit about relapse being an integral part of recovery(which he thinks is bullshit).Just wanted to throw it out there and hear what the informed masses thought about it.
