Will Ambien(zolpidem) still work after 10 years in the bottle?

Swim found an old ambien script in the trash earlier. It still has 25 of 30 10mg pills in it. The date on it says 10/14/97. Normally swim would throw such an old script out but he's been having really bad insomnia lately. Swim is hoping these pills will still work because he could really use them. There is no throw away date on the bottle.

Thanks.

Re: Will Ambien(zolpidem) still work after 10 years in the bottle?

Having previously researched medication expiration, SWIM thinks it's possible that the Ambien is still at least somewhat potent. In terms of health risk, not knowing where the pills have been (aside from in the garbage of all places) is probably of greater concern than the fact alone that they are over a decade old.

SWIM does not have enough knowledge about taking expired zolpidem tartrate, however while on the subject of expired pharmaceuticals, there are a few pharmaceuticals that SWIY should not mess with significantly past the expiration such as antibiotics.

SWIM heard from a possibly unreliable source that people die from chemicals decomposing in the bottle after two years... sort of like how plutonium turns into lead... SWIY should be careful or just get some benadryl

SWIM shot morphine amps that were a decade past the expiration... but once they were 13 years past the expiration (same batch) they'd lost a little potency. Other oral opiates that were about 10 years gone worked fine.

Re: Will Ambien(zolpidem) still work after 10 years in the bottle?

Expiration dates are generally just to scare people out of eating the drugs at a time when they don't need them or have not been perscribed them. Someone might find old pain pills lying and decide to take them for a headache etc. When they see an expiration date it's usually enough to discourage them.
