Anyone have a recipe for GOOD homemade spirits?

O.K. SWIM did his first distilling the other day. The stuff is highly alcoholic but tastes bloody awful. He knows plenty of things can be changed to make it better but was just wondering if you guys have any tried and tested stuff that he could try.

By the way, SWIM also follows homedistiller and so knows the stuff over there. He'll join that forum soon, but thought the topic might be of interest to booze lovers over here.
