turning GABA into GHB

Hey everyone my name is Brandon and I am from Michigan. I am new to this board but i like it alot. I was wondering if anyone knew how to turn Gamma Amino Butyric Acid into Gamma Hydoxy Butyric Acid (the chemical name for GHB) I know that is how the people who created it made it. I am hoping it is a simple process, unlikely but i am curious?

gaba is a close relative to butyric acid this one has a rancid odor to it and its esters are present in butter and human sweat...a nice smelly family.

pure gaba shouldn't really smell bad. The butyric acid
contaminants are usually what smell. pure gaba should taste kind
of sweet and tart. If it tasts sour you probably have impurities
like butyric acid in there. Just use activated carbon once you
convert it to GBL and you should be fine.

Not having done this myself, I can't say with certainty, but from the hours I've spent gathering information, I think I can clarify a bit about the extraction procedure:


The first time you distill, you are separating the easy and the harder to get gbl. The easy is the distillate. You do just as it says, toss the first 10ml, then take the rest ofit (the stuff that was boiled out)and run the gbl-&gt;ghb reaction, except including the activated charcoal.


The harder to get stuff is the junk in your original container that you didn't boil. For this, you simply add the dcm, remove the top layer that forms, distill it like the directions say (which separates the gbl from the dcm), toss the dcm back into the original pot, repeat 4x. The gbl you then run through the same process of baking soda and charcoal again. Boiling points are listed elsewhere.


Hope I helped in your understanding. Please, do not perform this procedure as once you extract the gbl, you are a criminal.

The reason why this reaction doesn't work particularly well is because aliphatic diazonium salts aren't particularly stable. They tend to decompose, releasing N2 and forming carbocations which react further producing a bunch of crap.

Because its a precursor to GHB, GABA is now a controlled drug in New Zealand as well, which sucks as its a good healthy supplement. But now its just as hard to source anyway, which leaves us with nail polish remover, just evaporate off the acetone.

This GABA > GBL synth is indeed an effective route for SWIM who may have problems getting GBL to make Na.GHB. When SWIM first did it, it was thought that only crap had been produced, but after the DCM extracts were distilled it was found the the product had all of the physical properties of GBL. Man is GBL a great solvent for plastics! SWIM said GBL was refluxed for 30 min with Sodium Carbonate and then boiled with Activated Carbon to produce a very hygroscopic white powder that would become "waxy" if left open for long.
Interestingly SWIM reported that a natural tolerance to Na.GHB was SWIM's experience, but SWIM has taken GABA nightly for many years. Anyone else hear of similar relations? SWIM reported that 3-6 grams were needed for and effect. But once GABA was discontinued 1-2 grams were said to be effective.

It would be interesting if anyone who has heard reports of this synth share the data, improvements etc.
