Legalizationists often focus on the negatives (or relative lack thereof) of illegal drug use - "nobody has ever overdosed on pot" - when arguing with deranged neo-cons, but neglect to mention why drugs even matter: they make you feel good in a way you normally couldn't. I find this a little odd.
If I were to make my case in Congress (oh, do I wish I had that chance!), I would explain the benefits incurred when an illicit drug is used responsibly. For example, MDMA and a mirror will cure an eating disorder with astounding proficiency and brevity, and in this case the "very harmful" ecstacy becomes a very helpful medicine. Good ol' green has a list of medically valuable properties longer than any other plant I can think of. Few neo-cons have ever heard of a study done where a group of overtly religious Christians tripped shrooms in a controlled setting, and nearly half of them reported vivid, unforgettable, lifechanging religious experiences (as has SWIM). Thinkers on drugs are responsible for at least half (if not closer to all) of modern music, limitless examples of the visual arts, literature of all varieties, and a considerable portion of imaginative-yet-validated scientific ideas.
My concept is this: have knowledgeable expert pharmacologists of all political stances classify drugs based on propensity for negative effects at maximum recommended dosage for full effect. Then, individuals would be allowed to apply for a license to possess and use a particular chemical drug class, provided that they bear sufficient knowledge, wisdom, and respect for the substance in question. A good example would be LSD: yes you can die when you trip, but only if you have no idea what you're doing with acid in the first place. Arranging good set and setting, though natural to some, does require knowledge and practice. A fantastic thought this license is, but nice to think anyways.
Basically, guys, were missing a big part of the point. Were too scared to talk about being high to people we think will treat us as inferiors because we like to divide ourselves from reality sometimes. If your right-wing mother starts taking multiple antidepressants, or your right-wing dad pops an extra Ambien every now and then, you can treat them like an inferior right back (not saying anyone reading this does, of course).
Moral of the story? Why risk drug health risks unless you're GETTIN HIGH!?!?
SWIM listened to a psychonautica podcast some time ago that had a speaker(sorry SWIM can't remember his name) whose lecture's main focus was how to go about creating a business for psychedelics and how much money you would need to invest versus revenue and what kind of jobs would be available. Everything SWIY mentioned above is in the same vein of what this man said would be the best way to go about it, with distribution to informed individuals that are taking it with their own freedom and volition to do so and for their own reasons. ( ie for getting high, or getting over traumatic stress, etc.)
