I DON’T know why this government pretends it thinks drug- taking is a huge problem when it spends inordinate amounts of time and money trying to either legalise or downgrade them.
What idiocy was it to set up a committee headed by so-called drug expert Prof David Nutt, who thinks it’s a great idea to downgrade ecstasy from a Class A to Class B drug—and having failed there now wants LSD downgraded from Class A to Class B?
Just how much is Prof Nutt (head of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs) being paid for no one to listen to him?
Does he actually have or know children who’ve died an excruciating death from ecstasy?
Has he ever looked at how such needless deaths affect the parents and families of these dead kids? And how the hell was he ever chosen for this job in the first place when he thinks taking ecstasy is no more dangerous than horse- riding?
Does this idiot academic ever read the papers? Does he know the number of 10 to 16-year- olds convicted of drug offences since Labour came to power has rocketed by 149 per cent as a result of this government’s sloppy, wishy-washy, completely confused messages on drugs?
If Prof Nutt thinks taking ecstasy tablets in the conditions our teenagers take them isn’t dangerous, why doesn’t he down a handful in front of a few TV cameras and experience first- hand what he’s telling a whole generation of kids is (almost) harmless?

So I emailed her and said this:

Right, you might want to think before you speak, On the issue of David Nutt, he is an expert and has been studying the effect of these drugs for years, he has used simple maths to work out that actually ecstasy is less dangerous than horse riding. You say what about all the young people who have died needlessly from ecstacy well what about the families of all the people who have lost a loved one from horse riding accidents, there are a lot more of them than there are of famillies who have lost some one from ecstasy.

Now you who seem to moan no end about how much money this government wastes, fail to realize we waste billions trying to tackle drugs through the criminal justice system, and we havn't actually reduced supply or availability of drugs. All we've managed to do is turn the supply of drugs over to the criminals and fill our prisons with people who have done no worse than the equivilant of drinking alcohol.

Do you drink alcohol miss malone? please tell me you do like all middle class people do. Well why is alcohol not illegal. Thousands die each year from alcohol related problems, should we ban alcohol? No because prohibition didn't work in america in the thirties and it sure doesn't work for any other drugs. How many people have died from cannabis overdose 0. yes zero nil zilch none, But cannabis is illegal, oh and don't forget Holland where the sale and consumption of soft drugs are legal have about the third of the rates of drug use that the UK has.

Has professor Nutt read the papers you ask. Well yes probably and realized what unscientific drivel is spouted in the newspapers about drugs. Most of the headlines 'Cannabis Causes Psycosis' for instance Are actually exaggerations and in some cases down right lies. Now I'm not saying cannabis is harmless, it is a harmful drug, much less than tobacco or alcohol but still a harmful drug. It's not me saying this if you read the proper, 'Peer-Reviewed' scientific studies that have been repeated and carefully thought out, carried out on a large demographic etc. you realize that in actual fact cannabis HAS NEVER BEEN PROVEN TO CAUSE PSYCHOTIC ILLNESS!. There has been a link made but wheather cannabis is a causal factor is still unclear. Proff. Nutt Is actually quite sensible he's not saying drugs are harmless he's saying let's compare the risk of drug use to other dangerous activities in society and that these are the comparitive harms. How can you deny that horse riding is more dangerous than ecstacy if you look at the figures this is clearly stated.

Now you say too many young people have ended up in prison because of the liberal attitude, is that not because of the criminal penalties associated with drug use. Does this not show that our drug laws are failing if so many are being needlessely arrested. Why are criminal penalties in place? THis is a PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUE AND NOT A CRIMINAL ISSUE.

If we ended drug prohibition, rates of drug use would not go up, and we could make them fall through good education. By Not having drugs in the hands of criminals we could regulate the supply. You're worried about kids getting drugs huh? well would it not be far more sensible to regulate drugs so sales to under 18's are not allowed like with tobacco and alcohol. I would also propose stricter regulation of alcohol and tobacco as to see kids don't get their hands on drugs. Remember drug dealers don't ask for ID, Drug dealers offer harder drugs to kids and get them hooked on smack (another thing regulation and control would stamp out).

Oh and by the way I don't take drugs, and if prohibition worked and drugs were impossible to get then I might support it but clearly it doesn't and we need a more realistic approach.

That is an excellent response. I would be very interested to see a reply, but I doubt that you will get one. As the end of that article said, I would love to see Prof. Nut take some (high quality; how all pills would be with regulation) ecstacy, and have a nice time on camera while continuing to explain his views.

the reason so man kids have died from ingesting Ecstasy is because they are buying it from these shady clandestine labs who think it's cool to sell their PMA tabs as MDMA. swim knows this from experience.
