Spoon Bowls VS Regual Bowls?
Is there a difference? SWIMS has been smoking for a little over four months now, and has made it a pretty common thing. So far she's only been using her friend's bowl and her ghetto tinfoil pipe (cringe).
SWIMS is looking to buy a bowl online, but she's not really sure what to get. SWIMS is not really sure if there's a difference between spoon bowls and regular bowls. is there a difference? if so, what is better? also, a pipe and bowl are the same thing right? only a bowl has a carb? thanks so much! i'm pretty new to this, and just want to get a little more sophisticated. |

Re: Spoon Bowls VS Regual Bowls?
a bowl is the part of the pipe that holds the tobacco, a carburator ( carb ) is located on the pipe, but not all pipes have them, bowls come in different sizes, everything from a one hit to a party bowl. I have no knowledge to what a spoon bowl is. also some pipes allow the bowls to be changed, they have threaded metal parts.

Re: Spoon Bowls VS Regual Bowls?
In SWIM's experience spoons are made of glass and do not require a screen, whereas most other pipes require a screen and are made from materials other than glass. SWIM says that he finds cleaning the glass pipes(spoons) to be much easier than pipes made from wood, brass, etc.
Its really all a matter of preference, most people seem to lean towards the pipes made of glass and they seem to dominate the market. SWIM has noticed at his local "alternative" shop lately that more chamber pipes(made of plastic and brass mostly) are being sold. Still, SWIM himself prefers glass spoons over other pipes. -Pope Albacore PS- BTW, the "bowl" is actually on all pipes...its where you put your smoking material.

alright, thanks so much.
SWIM thinks she'll buy a glass spoon pipe. she also feels really stupid for asking that question, but hey - everyone starts somewhere. |

Re: Spoon Bowls VS Regual Bowls?
Spoons aren't necessarily easier to clean than metal pipes. The only metal pieces swim has had have been a cinch to clean because they unscrew. They don't taste bad to smoke out of or anything, they don't break when you drop them, and they're generally cheaper.
Although glass pieces are pretty sweet too. I'm not saying one's better than the other. But I think people don't give metal pieces enough credit. |

Re: Spoon Bowls VS Regual Bowls?
Phaze finds that a metal bowled acrylic bong (slider bowl) is a mark in time, these are great starter pieces and every stoner should have one. Metal is good for some things, but no matter how good the device works metal is still harmful to the lungs. Glass is always the superior product in the lines of health.
Phaze finds that no matter what the smoking device, a small bowl is his preference. The weed seems to vaporize towards the end of the bowl and not be as strong and taste bad on a bowl that is too big. Swiy can always repack the bowl when it runs out. Spoon refers to the design, all pipes have a design and name they call them. But the physics of the pipe is what swiy should take in. Is the pipe a logical design. Is it narrow enough to not be harsh. Phaze finds that though a pipe with a wide chamber somewere on it claims that it will cool the smoke, but in his experience has always made a pipe harsh. A 3-7 inch long narrow small bowled pipe should be a alright design. As you collect more and more paraphenilia if you take in what you like and dislike about a pipe and make a few of your own you can judge for yourself what the pipe is gonna hit like before you buy it. purplehaze added 1 Minutes and 12 Seconds later... One more thing. The carb hole on a pipe needs to be larger than the hole in the bowl or it wont clear the smoke well and it will be harsh due to stale hits. Swiy can blow easy back into it to blow the smoke out the carb thats sitting but its still wasteful when a pipe will not clear. its also phazes opinion that bongs should not have carbs and all bongs should come with a bowl that lifts up aka slider bowl Last edited by purplehaze; 02-03-2009 at 17:44. Re: Spoon Bowls VS Regual Bowls?
How is metal that doesn't start vaporizing at normal marijuana/hashish burning temperatures be harmful? I always thought it was only harmful if swiy drilled his own pipe and breathed in metal particles.

Re: Spoon Bowls VS Regual Bowls?
It oxidizes. Also depending on the quality of metal, phaze has actually purchased metal pipes, not bong, but a pipe that started to rust over time. The metal used in a bong, may or may not be good quality. Thats why its best to use glass. Another common misconception is, it may not even be metal that was used, it could be aluminum.

Aluminum also doesn't vaporize at temperatures generated by lighters or burning marijuana. I'm not really in belief that metal is that harmful. But swim's the one taking the risk not me lol.

Re: Spoon Bowls VS Regual Bowls?
Not to derail this thread but aluminum foil clearly emits smoke into the air when a lighter is held to it. UTFSE will reveal that this discussion has been had many times on DF and its been proven over and over that glass is the safest method to use in regards to health. Borosilicate glass or pyrex is the safest. Which is basically the same thing. Kinda....
