Prescription narcotics in recovery?

Swim would like to get a thread going on prescription narcotics in recovery. Not maintenance but things like, opiates for a broken arm, opiate cough syrup or any other drugs.

Please list things like how long you had in sobriety, what you were put on, how many you were given, how many you actually took and what kind of introspective thoughts did you have before during and after the mind altering drugs were prescribed.

With this threads intent being to help others get through it.

Re: Prescription narcotics in recovery?

SWIM is recovering from both opiate and benzo addiction and relapsed last night (more medical than recreational, to treat his horrible insomnia) he started with 70mg of valium (diazepam), but when he woke up all his valium was gone, no memory of what happened. Anyways in terms of narcotic addiction he has often wondered the same, and it was brought up at his NA meeting, in which they said getting the drugs in the hospital isn't a problem, now taking the prescription home they said, if used by docs order isn't too bad either, but would SWIY honestly want to risk it? I know SWIM wouldn't unless it was some SEVERE pain.

SWIM thinks it shouldn't be a prob if SWIY is in the hospital getting these substances, once out, SWIM would stick to cannabis (which SWIY may or may not consider as relapse) or OTC pain relievers, and empty out most of the bottle, except for a few for HORRIBLE pain that may follow. SWIM can comment on his benz addiction though, he thought, oh it's ok i'm taking these just to help me sleep since i'm coming off other sleep meds that are un-effective, it makes sense to use something else to ease the rebound anxiety, wrong.

SWIM wishes the best to all those trying to stay clean, and props to those who have months, and years under their belt.
