okay, this sounds reaaallly ignorant, but can anyone explain to me
the difference b/w all these kinds of electronic music? i mean, i just
had some guy ask me last week, "what genres DO you know?"
because i wasn't quite sure of the Djs and shit he was talking about..
i mean, there's, drums 'n bass, techno, trance, house, acid, cyclo-
trance or something and then there's hard versions of all of those...
so many, so confusing! i'm just one of those ppl who if i hear
something good, i dance to it, but it would be nice to be able to find
music again after i've heard and know what i'm looking for! i came
from a graduating class where most ppl called anything "tehcno," if
it wasn't rnb, punk, rock or pop!

I would sugest hyperreal as a good place to start they have many different DJ mixes online as examples of the diferent genres.

http://djsets.hyperreal.org/

I just love when people classify all EDM as techno, it just shows ignorance, its good to see someone who wants to expand thier understanding.

Music is the answer !

Easy,

Trance has got that Boom Boom Boom Boom Boom bass sound to it, and is really uplifting. Examples, Armin Van Buuren, George Acosta, Dj Micro

House has got the same kind of bass but has got more of an edgy rave sound to it. Examples, Dj Irene, Bad Boy Bill, DJ Dan

Breakbeats has the kind of bass that some hip hop has, but also has the drum sounds.Mostly dark. But here's a few Examples, Dj Icey, Dj Baby Anne.

Drum N Bass is self explainitory. Mostly Dark wicked sounds. The opposite of Trance. Made to produce Dark Euphoria. Examples, Dieselboy, Ak1200, DJ Dara, Dillinja, Concord Dawn, Bassline Smith, Ressurections, ill skillz, Fresh

You still got a lot of learning to do in the dance music scene. Keep listening to it and you'll get it.

Don't worry, you've every right to be confused. There are all kinds ofobscure sub-categories with technical definitions used only by anorak-wearing obsessives.

Trance has 130-150 beats per minutes, and is in 4/4 time, with bits in 12/8 time.

Acid trance is a kind of trance that tends to use the TB-303 drum machine.

Goa trance has tracks 8-12 minutes in length, with complex melodies often going into 16th or 32nd notes. The distinction between Goa trance and psychedelic trance is ambiguous, but Goa tends to be more melodic.

Hardcore trance has at least 140bpm and a heavy sound, with harder drums.

Progressive trance involves building up a melody by addition of new beats and breaking it back down again.

I'm not trying to be a jerk but You just said trance is 130 - 150 Bpm, and Hardcore Trance is 140?I'm sorry, hardcore trancehas got to be at least 170bpm. I'm a DJ but I've never worked with Hardcore. You'd haveto be a really skilled DJ to work with hardcore. Maybe a hardcore DJ lol.

Well about genres.. Techno is the one for me.. every track has his own rytm and his own story. About Techno, most people experience a techno track like the same beat over and over again wich is defenetly NOT if u UNDERSTAND Techno! Techno takes u away and makes u SEE music and how music is made. U have to open your mind for it and let it take u away(especially when u are on XTC!). U could try listen some livesets on http://www.awakenings.nlMy favorite is the liveset on awakenings from Charles Siegling(15-4-2005) wich is on the front page of the website at the right under Dj Sets. That't the real shit.. Technooo! but thats my opinion ofcourse.. U only need RealPlayer to listen them so check it out!
Btw. Techno is different to Tekno, like it also but Tekno is more drums and shit like breakbeat..
out!

its all about listening to it as well. Download a bunch of drum
and bass, get the feel for its sound, same for trance, psy, you know
just listen. After a while you will be able to tell, kinda like
after you know rock, you can mainly tell if it is 80's by the sound and
sometimes industrial drums, as with 60's and stuff. Not always
but usually after you get to know the genre, you can diferentiate
between different sub-catigories. I mean you can tell jefferson
airplane is 60's-70's as can you tell that like iron maiden and some
metal is 80's. If you know floyd you can tell most of the time
when it was produced, like with learning to fly's weird drums.
Point is, just get into the music, listen to a song and then see what
genre it is placed under, you will get the feeling. Sorry for the
ramble

I think it the koolest thing when someone just starts listening to tekno music for their first time and they get hooked. Makes me remember when I was real young and started tripping and rolling, that kind of music kept me going!!

And hey Skettio, you can download a shitload of music on Bearshare.com

soulseek is a good P2Pprogram you can use

I found that as soon as I started taking drugs I started listening to dance/techno/house(whatever you wanna call it!) because they compliment each other so well. I listen to it when I'm sober too like you korky... at the moment I like trance but when I first got into it I was into hardhouse/hardstyle

yeah use soulseek. i have tons of stuff if you want to check any out. dont think i have any trance anymore, deleted most/all of it.

the problem (well, not really) with electronic / dance music is that one genre can cover such a wide range of music. 'techno' can range from dj rush style madness to derrick may (rhythim is rhythim) to inner city to a ton of other stuff. 'house' could mean mr fingers, or it could mean derrick carter, erick morillo, metro area. its very very difficult to make generalisations, but house tends to have more of an emphasis on groove and funk through basslines and real (or sythesised) instruments, whereas techno tends to be a bit more abstract in its pursuit of funk, sometimes pretty much foregoing a standard bassline completely. i guess similar things could be said for the other electronic genres, but im mainly a house / techno fan, with a bit of breaks thrown in, so i dunno much about anything else...

forgot to say - check out this site if you have time. got a pretty good explanation of the differences between many genres, plus an interesting history of most of them too.Edited by: billyloner
