Drug info - Xanax and life: Opinions on Alprazolam instead of alcohol

Well the dogs been advised by his uk vet to get on Xanax due to drinking alcohol as self medication at night only so only offers temp releif life is unbearable very disabled,the vet says he can use for life if nessecary as nothing else works including therapy .
Your thoughts please on this as the stopping of alcohol will no doubt prolong life and aslong as he don't cold turkey can you see a problem,this is a severe problem so the vet thinks it's the only way after 18 years of trying other things.
The dog is very worried about tolerance but has been advised the anti anxiety part rarely sees tolerance only the sedative effects which he understands is why you need to up dose because dogs think they arnt working anymore the dog is taking for a condition not fun

just to add if anyone knows,if your dog takes say .25 3 times aday and eventually you feel nothing because of tolerance..what happens if ones dog maintains that dose never upping or lowering does the dog get withdrawal effects because it isnt working and needs to take more?
