offering marijuana (herb or hash) to a recovering/recovered addict?

I know that once some one tries to kick the habbit, be it booze, heroine, coke, adderall, valium, what ever, once they decide its time any use of drugs, even just "one beer when the steelers win" is enough to prompt relapse. Most of the time family members of recovering addicts (my only experience is with alcoholics) will say never offer him/her even one sip because they can no longer handle it responsibly. My question is how does marijuana factor into this?

swim knows several addicts both 'recovered' and recovering who smoke marijuana. my question if some one is trying to get clean should we avoid allowing them near marijuana or will an ocassional toke not induce a relapse?

swim thinks that he shouldn't even allow them to smell it atleast while hes around. he knows he can't change other people but maybe he can prevent them from hurting themselves worse, but not all his friends are so responsible, and they'll even toke with people trying to clean up and get there shit together. i was just wondering what the general concencious is?

Swim thinks that swiy is very thoughtful and a good friend. Everyone is different, what causes one to fall may not bother another.

Re: offering marijuana (herb or hash) to a recovering/recovered addict?

Offering a recovering addict drugs of any type is irresponsible and thoughtless. That is not to say that every recovering addict must stay abstinent from all drugs, but if they choose to use certain drugs occasionally they can seek it out for themselves. Many who require total abstinence to remain clean do not have the willpower to say no when it is put right under their noses.

Re: offering marijuana (herb or hash) to a recovering/recovered addict?

I concur with lostgurl here. Some people need total abstinence in order to get clean and sober which means that they can't use alcohol or marijuana. However, some people that have gotten clean from their drug of choice can still partake in some other drugs without starting their addiction cycle all over again. Unless these addicts that are recovered or recovering actively seek out marijuana or whatever it may be, I would not have it around them. SWIY can enjoy it but just don't do it around them unless they ask for some. The reason being that some addicts can start their whole addictive behavior and processes all over again from just using one or two times.

Re: offering marijuana (herb or hash) to a recovering/recovered addict?

Swim does not believe marijuana is physically addictive or very mentally addictive. But if you find that one person who hates their life and will do anything to feel different then they will do it over and over again.

Many people in recovery have low self esteem and used drugs because they can not stand feeling normal.

Re: offering marijuana (herb or hash) to a recovering/recovered addict?

Also when a person takes something that mellows them out it often lowers their inhibitions which can sometimes result in person giving in to their cravings of their drug of choice. Like I have said before, not everybody needs total abstinence in recovery, but if someone does need and choose to be abstinent they certainly don't need their friends offering them drugs of any kind.

Your probably right.

One of my good friend she used to be a chronic IV user of amphetamines.. She lost all her children over it etc.. She *eventually* quit, but she just smokes pot now. Pot doesn't *seem* to be causing her problems, though I have noticed this recent trend where she gets drunk a lot, violent etc

Re: offering marijuana (herb or hash) to a recovering/recovered addict?

This is a very interesting topic, and one SWIY has been pondering often lately. SWIM recently quit using methamphetamine, and after using alcohol numerous times since then has discovered that they lack the ability to enjoy controlled drinking. That being said SWIM has also enjoyed marijuana numerous times since then and has found it to be a very rewarding experience, IF used responsibly... Which SWIM has found they ARE able to do, but SWIM refuses to use it to excess. SWIM is a firm believer in weed and psychedelics It's really up to the person in recovery... SWIM tested and found they cannot consume alcohol, and found the inverse true of weed. SWIM believes it comes to the individual and that some people definately would lack the discipline to smoke da herb

nefarious145 added 2 Minutes and 5 Seconds later...

Also, earlier on in recovery when cravings were still more intense for SWIM, SWIM found that smoking weed was much riskier as it lowered the inhibitions and magnified SWIM's intense drug-craving mental sate.
