Antidepressant (SNRI) and amphetamine use

A friend of mine was just prescribed some anti depressant medication (pristiq - desvenlafaxin, an SNRI) and wants me to find out how safe it is to use amphetamines (just normal amphetamines not meth) on them. Apparently the doctor has told him that they react badly, but he has just had 3 tablets (50 mg) in the last 3 days. He plans on using amphetamines today but wanted me to find out if this was safe.

Re: Antidepressant (SNRI) and amphetamine use

OK I just asked my mate, he said he took his first tablet on Thursday morning (3 days ago) Friday morning (2 days ago) and yesterday morning (1 day ago). They are all 50 mg tablets. He didn't take this mornings tablet and wants to use speed today before he has to work in a couple of days. He says it's too hard just having it (the speed) in the bag sitting there but he does not want to do something that's going to be life threatening.

Re: Antidepressant (SNRI) and amphetamine use

Amphetamine has some serotonergic activity, therefore concomitant use with SSRI's/SNRI's should be avoided due to the risk of serotonin syndrome which leads to CNS irritability, altered consciousness, confusion, myoclonus, ataxia, abdominal cramping, hyperpyrexia, shivering, pupillary dilation, diaphoresis, hypertension, and tachycardia

Re: Antidepressant (SNRI) and amphetamine use

I'd be more concerned about the norepinephrine effects than serotonergic ones. Amphetamines cause a release of norepinephrine, which may lead to potentially dangerous levels in the synapses when combined with an SNRI. This may also lead to increased blood pressure/hypertensive reactions.

Re: Antidepressant (SNRI) and amphetamine use

I agree, the effects on norepinephrine might be the most important because amphetamine has the highest affinity for inhibiting its reuptake, and depending if we are talking about pure d-amp or some l-amp its release. An antidepressant with norepinephrine reuptake effects might go very badly with a strong norepinephrine agent like amphetamine

Re: Antidepressant (SNRI) and amphetamine use

If swim were doing this, swim would want to consider the half-lives of each drug. Some ssri's are designed with really long half-lives.

Re: Antidepressant (SNRI) and amphetamine use

We are all so different. Somebody medical once said we are as different on the insides as we are on the outsides

Swim takes together 50 mg of d-amphetamine a day, 20 mg prozac a day and 100 mg of milnacipran (SNRI) a day for treatment of ADHD and OCD

Combination works reasonably well, but swim triturated very slow under medical supervision up to current doses. Never any hint of seratonin syndrome or over activation of NE.

However this swim may be very deficient in the targeted neurotransmitters and another swim may be starting from a fuller compliment of said neurotransmitters etc and therefore such a regime may lead to trouble?

Slow trituratuion is the key swim thinks! often a luxury unavailable for many recreational users swim imagines

Re: Antidepressant (SNRI) and amphetamine use

SWIM is on Venlafaxine (an SNRI antidepressant). SWIM snorted and injected ALOT of STRONG amphetamine last night and did not notice any interaction with the SNRI at all, bit headachy today and fealt a bit depressed when coming down but those effects are to be expected with anyone whether they're on antidepressants or not.

If the antidepressant is not in the SNRI category then SWIM would suggest being careful - SWIM has read that Amphetamines do not mix so well with other categories of antidepressants

Re: Antidepressant (SNRI) and amphetamine use

SWIM has both anxiety and ADD. During SWIM's childhood and adolescent years SWIM was prescribed all sorts of medication cocktails and amphetamines/stimulants and antidepressants were always part of it. SWIM had been on antidepressants, stimulants, amphetamines, antipsychotics, benzos, anticonvulsants and all sorts of crazy meds together. SWIM then went off all medications for a year. Mixing Venlafaxine / Effexor with amphetamines and stimulants and benzos that were all prescription did some amazing stuff to SWIM's personality. Dexedrine, Concerta and Effexor along with lots of other meds mixed together changed SWIM's personality in an amazing way. Effexor is kind of like a stimulant in itself and mixing it with other stimulants/amphetamines feels really great, it makes you feel it more, It did some crazy things to SWIM's personality, it was very interesting at the time, SWIM did and said a lot of things the real SWIM wouldn't say or do. It's fun.
