Stopping Fentanyl cold turkey...
Swim has been on Fentanyl for at least six months, at the highest doseage of 150 mcg every 48 hours (this was prescribed by Swim's doctor for chronic back pain which resulted in a spinal fusion appx. three months ago), and now at the self-imposed doseage of 100 mcg every 72 hours. Swim admits to having abused the Fentanyl gel-packs, having built up a tolerance of 10 - 20 milligrams a day at the highest point, but Swim has also managed to get back on the patches as prescribed. The thing is, this drug is ruining swim's life, and swim would like to know if going off of the 100mg/72hr doseage is dangerous (ie. similar to going off of alcohol, benzos with risk of seizures and the like). Swim has understood that going off of opiates is safe, just hell (swim has gone cold turkey before after being on very high doseages of OxyContin...which swim is also ashamed to admit to abusing). So, swim's question is--is it safe to go cold turkey of off the Fentanyl, or what is the most rapid taper swim could do. Extreme pain and w/ds are a terrible fear, but drugs are ruining swim's life, and swim is terrified of od'ing. Swim simply cannot seem to use opiates responsibly and has to just get off of them altogether. Swim would also like to know how bad the w/d is going to be. Swim is determined to get clean, but cannot afford inpatient treatment and is afraid and ashamed to go to the doctor with the problem. Flames/angry reactions are expected, but swim is desperate. Someone please help.
