Re: velvet underground + speed
Lou Reed was a big fan of amphetamine+heroin, so he was probably motorin' while writing his songs. Swim Never really listened to them amped up, but being sober they're amazing as hell!

Re: velvet underground + speed
ah, heroin is one of my favorite songs. Definitly my top as far as VU. Venus is good for any downer, just chills you out but still gives you that chill through each bone.
But as far as an upper would be, anything that's upbeat is a great energizer (like you really need it...) and you definitly got the top ones. |

Re: velvet underground + speed
i see you got a jim morrison avatar. that right there is some real good taste, i like vu, but the doors are the all time greatest, in my opinion. not a song in this world as moving as the end.

Re: velvet underground + speed
If I could be one other person, ANYONE, it would be Jim. Being a musician, I strive for that voice, and the poetry. Plus all the rediculous partying, without giving a second thought to anything. Freedom is what Jim has, and that's all I want. but as for the most moving song, I'd have to go with my favorite song right now, Right In Two by Tool, possibly my 2nd favorite band.
Top 5 would go kind of like: Doors Tool VU Grateful Dead Hawkwind. Damn I'm a hippie! |

Re: velvet underground + speed
oh hell yeah, im a total hippie. listen to tons of classic psychedelic. and i don't think there has been poetry as deep as jim's since he left us in 71. i first heard it about 4 years ago, but american prayer still gives me the chills. real powerful, spellbinding stuff, and ray, robbie and john's instrumentals alongside it just top it off perfectly.

Re: velvet underground + speed
Robbie's one of the most underated guitarist ever. He's just overshadowed by Jim. But songs like Spanish Caravan have him sounding better than Hendrix (btw hendrix is somethin to trip to!)

Re: velvet underground + speed
oh yeah, robbie is definitely great. i gotta say though, my second favorite door, after jim, has to be john. the way he plays the drum, sounds like the primordial heart beat of the soul. while jim lets his haunting poetry flow out and robbie plays those mellow riffs, john's drum beat and ray's amazing organ guide the whole thing beautifully.

Re: velvet underground + speed
eh, we're getting off topic. Maby another thread for the Doors another day, but lets get back to VU. Personally, I hate nicco. She isn't all that.

i didn't really like femme fatale, but i guess all tomorrow's parties is okay. but yes, lou blows nico away, VU was better off without her.

Re: velvet underground + speed
You know what's also great to listen to? The Rolling Stones. Don't ask me why, but whenever SWIM is tweaked out (in a good way) the stones are like sex in his ears....

Re: velvet underground + speed
i read a book last summer on drug use in the usa since the 40's titled "can't find my way home" and there was a whole chapter on the wharhol scene and VU. and yes, the VU's albums are very much speed music. White light/White heat in my mind.

Re: velvet underground + speed
Coincidentally, SWIM spent the last few hours of the night listening to Sweet Jane over and over again (the Loaded version). Every once in a while he'd put on White Light/White Heat from Rock 'n' Roll Animal.
Also, SWIM seconds the Stones: Jumpin' Jack Flash, Gimme Shelter, Under My Thumb, Beast of Burden and Don't Stop are bliss to listen to while speeding. Most of the time, SWIM will start his binge with Blinded by the Lights by The Streets. Lovely stuff. |

Re: velvet underground + speed
My stuffed beaver Wally finds it funny that he came across this thread today. While on speed, he loves to listen to electronic music, especially Daft Punk and Aphex Twins. But today he felt like changing it up and decided to be cliche, so he listened to White Light/White Heat (similar in listening to Heroin on Heroin). Thereafter, he found Sister Ray and if White Light/White Heat was great on speed, Sister Ray was awesome.
He was thinking as to why it sounded awesome and came to the conclusion that these two tracks are very unsettling (the music never seems to resolve itself). Essentially, it mimics the drug. It reminds him of hearing Born Under Punches by the Talking Heads (which he recommends when swiy is on speed). Wally usually turns to Velvet Underground for Heroin or most downers, but has discovered a new role they can play in his drug experiences. |
