the company i work for recently hired a new guy, and he is hispanic and barely speaks any english. the only reason this is important to include is because I can't ask him myself what is going on.

he has a one long pinky nail which I noticed today, and shortly after I spotted that, I realized he was sniffling like all damn day..

is there any reason that somebody would have a long pinky nail? fashion? really?????

swim wanted to start a thread about drug conventions in spanis, ie how to ask questions like that because he lives right near a neighboorhood in a maryland suburb where thesres lots of hispanic drug activity. like litterally 10 street adresses down from him theres a corner store and he knows that white, rock and brown are all sold by a dealer who stands there using the pay phone for his transactions.

but anyway, seems suspicious. i would try confronting him but try and read up on your espanol

I know I could of done that all along, but I was hoping to get some real conversation, as opposed to a possibly mis-translated piece of text

I am going to write on a piece of paper:

Usted tiene cocaina?

=

You have cocaine?

and see how that goes...

avoid usted in casual conversation. its the formal you, and its a relic of the days when commoners could not adress the nobility. its sort of like swim, only in the seccond person. in some languages this is called 3rd person you.
using usted could make you look like a rat or a narc

try tu instead, tu tiene cocaina is basically "do you have cocaine?" i personally would say no to that question even if the answer was yes but i mean thats just me

I'm not really worried about this, since its construction that we are doing, and its like.. i know he wouldn't think this..

i tried translation sites and "tu tiene cocaina" came out with

"has your cocaine"

and

"have your cocaine"...

since I'm clearly unfamiliar with the language, and I know he knows that.. would usted get the point across well enough?

Usted would get the point across, albeit awkwardly, but swim doesn't think anyone would be expecting fluency here... The reason swiy got a bizarre answer in the google translator is because "tu" and "tu (with an accent on the U" are two different words in spanish, without the accent it is possessive and with the accent it is the 2nd person pronounl.

I was planning on writing it down, on a piece of paper, or wood and showin it to him.

Having taken Spanish for 4 years in high school, allow SWIM to shed some light...

What SWIY wants to say is:

"Te gusta a fiesta, como cocaína?"

This literally translates to: Do you like to party, like cocaine?

on the long pinky nail, it's also has cultural significations, such as implying that one is not currently involved in physical labour- a kind of middle-class symbol if you wish.

i would get to know him, which would be a sure way of finding out if swiyou wants to.
Honestly, if i was a new migrant in a country, with a cold, and this guy comes up and asks me in wobbly spanish if i did drugs or cocaine, i would find that pretty arbitrary, borderline insulting, or at least a little odd. especially if my long pinky nail is mentioned...

My assumption from earlier:

While working today, I was trying to talk to him,and just ask him simple words and communicate with him. Make him know me a bit more I suppose

and then out of the blue, he walked up and said "You smoke?"

I said "Ciggs? Mota?"

Then to my shock, he said "No, Coca"

I was like "Hmm no coca smoking, you?"

he responded with "yes",

then I tried to act out the gesture with my hands, I asked him "freebase??" and he said yes.

then I pointed to my own pinky nail and was like "is that why?"

and he shook his head yes.

So there you have it.

here in South Africa there are alot of africans/black people that have long pinky nails. they don't do cocaine. as much as it might sound ridicilious, i think they use the long pinky nail to dig in their noses & ears...
