I know this guy who was taking daily 15mg of methylin (generic ritalin) in doses of 5mg every few hours. He did this for a week and during that time his jaw, neck, shoulder and chest muscles were tensing up and would not relax til the drug wore off. He was pushing his tongue on his teeth and the roof of his mouth, sucking on his teeth and his teeth were chattering. He has stopped taking the methylin and two days later still cannot close his jaw all the way or chew whole food. He is eating a liquid diet and worried his jaw is wrecked forever. He has not been able to find anything at all online or in the manufacturer's literature regarding jaw problems from methylin. If you know anything about this or how to fix it please help!

Re: Help jaw problem methylin
its a known fact that rit can cause tics and clenching...the clendhing can cause overtight masseter (a mouth muscle) muscles which stems from teh constant constant constant contraction of the muscle (aka clenching) which is coming from the jaw clenching..one wold guess your grinding your teeth as well..causing additional pain and over excess could lead to jaw probs lke TMJ..swim woud say if this is a new med and a new prob maybe switch to something else..the amount you mentioned is a relaticl low dose..
maybe the dr can ive swim someting for skeletol muscle relaxation sch as skelaxin? it wont give swima buzz but it may help relax the jaw muscles.. this many probs with sucha low doese would make one think its a bad match for swim. though if swim cant close his mouth...GO TO A DR..it could still be over tight muscles from constant clenching and muscle shortening but thats to serious to not check out. oneeno added 13 Minutes and 30 Seconds later... ok apparently i cannot edit my posts..so sorry..but to add one mre thing if the prob is stemming from the jaw muscles being to tight swim could and should try massage therapy for the face/neck and upper back.. often all those muscles will play together causing pain..it may take a few sessions but it cant hurt to try. a good therapist should be able to show yo massage techniques you can use and take home with you as well. (im a massage therapy student so this is all shit i learn about) im gonna take a wild guess and say swim may have tight neck muscles going from the bottom of hisneck to the tp of his head in the back??? same thing..constant muscle contraction = shortened tight muscles = pain..learn some good stretches and drink enough water...muscls dont work properly if yor dehydrated and ritalin is a dierutic..which means you piss out water in excess and dehydrate...
