I know it isn't a movie, but the HBO show The Wire deserves to be up there. It's about drug dealers in the ghettoes of Baltimore and the cops that track them, tap their phones, investigate them, and build cases against them. Unlike other cop shows an entire season is a single investigation. It's just an amazingly insightful and realistic look at the drug war on the street level (the creator spend 18 months with the Baltimore homicide unit).
My favorite quote of the show was when the boss of a syndicate is basically trying to turn his dealing group into a real business and is going to business school to actually figure out how to improve things. Because of this all the dealer's are meeting and following Robert's Rules of Order, at the end one of the guys is writing something down: Boss: "What are you doing" Dealer: "Robert's Rules of Orders says we're supposed to take minutes at every meeting" Boss: "You're taking minutes of a criminal fucking conspiracy dawg?!" |

Re: Top 10 Drug Movies
swim finds there are differences between fims she likes to see on drugs and drug films -- films which are about drugs or addiction or have that theme...
the ultimate drug film for her is Trainspotting. her favourite film with a drug theme has to be Twin Peaks Fire Walk with Me (Twin peaks in general). swim sees a lot of surreal/strange films and they're often enhanced with some drug use. note Naked Lunch, the Shining, Blue Velvet for movies with drug/alcohol elements that swim likes or finds powerful. as for light & fun one, The Big Lebowski is swim's favourite! for a really silly time, swim recommends Dave Chapelle's stoner movie Half Baked! also Chappelle show is very funny -- Tyrone Biggums, Rick James, etc... )further films swim recommends which i don't think have been mentioned are Better off Dead (to see stoned), Ed Wood, 24 hour Party People, Withnail & I, Wizard of Oz -- not all are obviously drug-related but recommended films... oh and swim says see North by Northwest stoned -- it's an astonishingly good movie.. swim can go on forever when it comes to film! happy to recommend/comment. Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
Twin Peaks Fire Walk with Me - Trailer Twin Peaks Fire Walk with Me_.jpg Year: 1992Genre: Thriller Director: David Lynch Cast: David Bowie Heather Graham Sheryl Lee Ray Wise Drugs used: ? Tagline: Meet Laura Palmer... In a town where nothing is as it seems... And everyone has something to hide. Essentially a prequel to David Lynch and Mark Frost's earlier TV series "Twin Peaks". The first half-hour or so concerns the investigation by FBI Agent Chet Desmond (Chris Isaak) and his partner Sam Stanley (Kiefer Sutherland) into the murder of night-shift waitress Teresa Banks in the small Washington state town of Deer Meadow. When Desmond finds a mysterious clue to the murder, he inexplicably disappears. The film then cuts to one year later in the nearby town of Twin Peaks and follows the events during the last week in the life of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) a troubled teenage girl with two boyfriends; the hot-tempered rebel Bobby Briggs (Dana Ashbrook) and quiet biker James Hurley (James Marshall), her drug addiction, and her relationship with her difficult (and possible schizophrenic) father Leland (Ray Wise), a story in which her violent murder was later to motivate much of the TV series. Contains a considerable amount of sex, drugs, violence, very loud music and inexplicable imagery. Written by Douglas Baptie http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105665/plotsummary 24 Hour Party People 24 hour Party People - Trailer 24 hour Party People_.jpg Year: 2002Genre: Biography Director: Michael Winterbottom Cast: Steve Coogan John Thomson Drugs used: ? Tagline: The unbelievably true story of one man, one movement, the music and madness that was Manchester. Manchester 1976: Cambridge educated Tony Wilson, Granada TV presenter, is at a Sex Pistols gig. Totally inspired by this pivotal moment in music history, he and his friends set up a record label, Factory Records, signing first Joy Division (who go on to become New Order) then James and the Happy Mondays, who all become seminal artists of their time. What ensues is a tale of music, sex, drugs, larger-than-life characters, and the birth of one of the most famous dance clubs in the world, The Hacienda - a mecca for clubbers as famous as the likes of Studio 54. Graphically depicting the music and dance heritage of Manchester from the late 70's to the early 90's, this comedy documents the vibrancy that made Mad-chester the place in the world that you would most like to be. Written by IGB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0274309/plotsummary Withnail & I Withnail & I - Trailer Withnail & I_.jpg Year: 1987Genre: Comedy Director: Bruce Robinson Cast: Richard E. Grant Paul McGann Drugs used: ? Tagline: You are invited to spend an hilarious weekend in the English countryside. London 1969 - two 'resting' (unemployed and unemployable) actors, Withnail and Marwood, fed up with damp, cold, piles of washing-up, mad drug dealers and psychotic Irishmen, decide to leave their squalid Camden flat for an idyllic holiday in the countryside, courtesy of Withnail's uncle Monty's country cottage. But when they get there, it rains non-stop, there's no food, and their basic survival skills turn out to be somewhat limited. Matters are not helped by the arrival of Uncle Monty, who shows an uncomfortably keen interest in Marwood... Written by Michael Brooke {michael@everyman.demon.co.uk} London: The Sixties. Two down-on-their-luck actors (Withnail and Marwood) find solace in drink and other substances. Seeking respite from their uneventful lives they escape up north to Penrith to Withnail's uncle's stone cottage. Faced with no modern conveniences, a bunch of oddball locals, and a surprise visit from an amorous "Uncle Monty", their wits are tested, along with their friendship. You need the ingredients for White Russians, some marijuana, and some beer. Basically you just drink a white russian when he does, smoke a doobie when he does, and drink beer when he does. By the end of the movie you are quite intoxicated, but not too severely. There are many variations of this you can do to suit your needs or preferences, such as just taking a hit out of a bong each time the dude smokes, or maybe a sip of white russians instead of a whole one for lightweights. Its still fun though! |

Rules of Attraction is pretty good and portrays drugs fairly accurately.
^Whoops. The movie "Head" is a trip in itself. Not straight up about drugs, but obviously influenced by them. It stars the Monkees and was written by Jack Nicholson. What else is there to say... The Rules of Attraction
The Rules of Attraction - Trailer Rules of Attraction_.jpg Year: 2002Genre: Drama Director: Roger Avary Cast: James Van Der Beek Shannon Sossamon Jessica Biel Kate Bosworth Drugs used: ? Tagline: There Are No Rules Camden College. Sean Bateman is the younger brother of depraved Wall Street broker Patrick Bateman. He's also a drug dealer who owes a lot of money to "fellow" dealer Rupert Guest, as well as a well-known womanizer, for he sleeps with nearly half of the female population on campus. Lauren Hynde is, technically, a virgin. She's saving herself for her shallow boyfriend, Victor Johnson, who's left the States to backpack across Europe. Her slutty roommate, Lara, has the hots for Victor as well. Paul Denton, who used to date Lauren, is openly bisexual and attracted to Mitchell Allen (Thomas Ian Nicholas), who's dating Candice to prove to Paul that he's not gay. Sean loves Lauren. Paul loves Sean. And Lauren may love Sean. Written by Will This is a twisted story about sex, drugs, and college. Three disturbed students at Camden college get involved in a love triangle. Sean Bateman is a womanizing drug dealer who falls in love with virginal Lauren (not to be confused with her slutty roommate Lara,) because he inspects that she is his secret admirer, who is leaving notes in his box. Although Lauren does like Sean, she is still infatuated with Victor (her shallow ex boyfriend) who is in Europe for a semester. Lauren used to date Paul before he came out of the closet, and now Paul has his eyes on Sean when he mistakes him for bisexual. Things get more complicated since all the side characters (including the mentioned Lara and Victor) are deeply disturbed as well. Everybody is only looking out for themselves. Re: Top 10 Drug Movies
Here are a few that i just think are must see.
1. Spun: In my opinion, it captures the feeling of being twacked in every sense of the word. The camera work, visuals, the randomness of the story, the acting. It was so close to real life, it was crazy. 2. New Jack City: Movie about the beginning and start of the Crack epidemic. Stars Wesley Snipes, Ice-T, and Chris Rock. Great modern Scarface, you basically take scarface, change the cubans, to blacks. Move it from miami to Phili. Great Movie. 3. 50 Pills: About a college kid who needs to make $1000 dollars by the end of the night or get kicked out of college. His roommate drug dealer buddy, gives him an option, Sell 50 pills of x. It shows the true randomness of drug dealing and the people you meet. Great funny movie. They are all great movies, and should be checked out |

Re: Top 10 Drug Movies
Well I scanned through the thread in my intoxicated stupor and it seems like all the good ones have been listed.
But! Fun fact about Drugstore Cowboy - you know the old junkie priest in the film, that Matt Dillon's character is friends with? The guy who played the priest was William Burroughs. |

Boondock Saints is amazing as well The Boondock Saints
