growing kratom?
Swib know someone who has a rooted cutting. Swim was wondering what information is out there for growing and how to take a cutting? Can they be established outside in non-tropical places?

From what I have read, one would be better off buying a small kratom tree, as many people have no luck growing the cuttings. They just don't grow well in most cases. Seeds are a better option, and small kratom trees seem to grew even better.
Kratom trees can be grown indoors with good results, and placed outside during periods of warm weather. Kratom trees do very well during summer in most climates. When growing in doors, the temp should be kept at about 80 degree F, give or take 5. Water PLENTY! Something about wind seems to increase alkaloids production, or so I have read. Regular potting soil should be used. |

Thank you sands
Swib’s friend’s is inside a reptile cage that is around 60%-75% humidity and has a halide and reptile lights on it is this good in winter? What do you mean by a small tree? Did it have do come from a seed. Swibs friend bought a cutting a foot tall. It came in a quart size pot and roots were coming out of the bottom. He waited a few days and transplanted it in a 2.5 gallon pot with fox farm organic dirt and medium. He has had it a week and already grown at least 5cm and has formed new leaves, so it seems fine, is there trouble ahead? Does one want to keep the soil moist or let it dry out some? What is the lowest winter temperature it can handle? When it is big enough to take a cutting does one need to get a hormone? Do people not do well with all the cuttings sold on the net overall? Is there a place or book with more information there does not seem to be much available that swib can find. |

I've never grown kratom, so I can't answer many of your questions. You should keep the soil moist, and never let it dry out. You don't need to use hormones, but provide plenty of nutrients and water. If the cutting your talking about is growing, than it should be fine. Overall, people report difficulty in getting cuttings to grow.

Thanks again sands
swib saw that. The homepage of these forums also has a bit of info on the topic. Thats where the idea of putting it in the reptile cage came from and why the soil was chosen. Swib also read about cuttings being very difficult but seem to be popping up many places. Swib wondered if someone fgured a better way out. Also looking for fertilizer info, most informaion swib came acraoss is rather general about care. thanks again |

Re: Growing kratom plants
I want to grow Kratom as well, but I found only American vendors and I live in Europe.
Do you think that the plant will arrive alive after some days in a box and maybe in low temperature? Anyone done it? |

Kratom grows fast in the spring, once the temps rise up to the 90's growth slows. I saw someplace is selling a bunch of seed grown Mitragyna.

This is an old thread but I thought I'd pick it up again to see what new news there may be. I have 4 decent sized Kratom trees. 2 of them between 3 and 4 feet tall, 1 about 3 feet and 1 about 1-1/2 feet. I'm just starting to try cloning and so far have been unsuccessful. I have been trying to clone Kratom in water with cloning solutions added to the water. I've had cuttings live so far for several weeks without developing roots. Eventually they all rot. I have not been successful making sure I change the water daily. I am going to try soaking the cuttings in a more concentrated does of cloning solution for only a half hour, then place in a medium like vermiculite and sand and have a more dilute cloning solution bubbling in a container next to the container so that small amounts of the solution gradually splatter into the container. I also have a mister set up to spray the plant with a 60 second mist once every hour.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

When they get bigger I am going to try this: Cut off a strip of bark from around a mature branch, just enough to expose the next layer of the branch. Put root hormone and fungicide on the exposed ring around the branch. cover the exposed part of the branch with damp peat moss and tie plastic around the moss to keep in moisture. You can then cut the branch off the tree when it has enough roots to plant. I am not 100% sure if this will work, I am just going by my observation. This is deffinatly going to be my first approach at it. I Hope this works too! |

For those not in humid places, me thinks Kratom will only thrive in a green house that is kept humid, and to keep the pests away. If anyone lives near San Francisco, PM me...

Hello everyone, swim is new to the board. Anyways, he has a hydro system he's been using to grow various herb's and such, and wondered if growing Kraton hydroponically would be a workable idea? About the height he could use a growth hormone to stop verticle growth and turn it into basically a "shrub".
Any thoughts on this? Last edited by Bajeda; 04-01-2007 at 23:21. Reason: incrimination / terrible spelling |

Questions about growing Kratom hydroponically
Hello, Swim is growing Kratom and Salvia hydroponically. Salvia always
grows like crazy but the Kratom grows extremely slowly. Question is what is the best nutrient and light formula for fastest hydroponics Kratom growth? Here is swim's system. Let me know what you think. 1. Swim uses T5 lighting with 6000 kelvin temp bulbs, about 16 hours a day. 2. He uses clay pebbles as my growing medium with a drip system that recirculates from the large bin container. 3. My nutrients (He thinks this is where he really needs the help) is the vitagrow, vitamicro and vitabloom from general hydroponics. He does 2 teaspoons vitamicro per gallon, 2 teaspoons vitagrow per gallon and 1 teaspoon vitabloom per gallon. 4. He tries to keep the php around 6 or so. 5. He sprays the plants once a day. As mentioned swim's Salvia plants grow like crazy in this setup but the Kratom does not..... He knows the Kratom should be growing fairly fast. ANY professional opinions will be SO HELPFUL! Thanks much. Last edited by Bajeda; 04-01-2007 at 23:18. Reason: please stop incriminating.... |

Re: Kratom Hydroponicly?
Ild prolly say its not the best idea to grow Kratom under HPS (more so in actual hydro system) coz it is a tree and trees usually take a while to get big an healthy(but im no expert on Kratom)
I jus did a google search an came up with these, hope they help a little. http://www.erowid.org/plants/kratom/...ivation1.shtml http://www.entheogen.com/forum/archi...hp?t-6201.html |

Also, we'd prefer if one did not use 1st person narrative for these gardening threads, who knows what the legal status of kratom may be in the future? Also this is an international forum and kratom is illegal in several countries. |

growing and taking cuttings from kratom
here is some info i hope all you growers will find usefull...this is the care sheet provided to me when i bought my kratom tree...there is some great info on cultivation of kratom including a method for taking cuttings that is supposed to be very successful..
Kratom plants want filtered sun outdoors. Like under a tree getting zero direct sun. They love rainy days and high humidity. I only water mine when they look droopy because normally the rain takes care of it. The only time I fertilize is when the older(largest) leaves start to turn yellow and that is a lack of Nitrogen and I barely fertilize with a balanced fertilizer. I bring my Kratom plants indoors when the temps get down to 40 degrees at night because they will die below that. Indoors you want to use a professional grow light like high pressure sodium or Metal Hylide which can be bought at any grow shop. These lights range from 400- 1500 watts and all work fine but the bigger watts cover a wider space for more plants. I use 1000 watts. You want to leave your light on for 18-24 hours per day for the plant to be in "grow mode. Indoors you want to try to keep the humidity up. They want above 60% and if its not you should mist the plant often. Only water and fertilize as described above. Some people say the have success without a grow light and by a window but I have never tried that. If you are doing that always let the plant almost dry out between watering because it will use way less water because of the lack of light or sun. Both inside and out when you replant your plant you want to use professional soil that drains well. I recommend Fox Farm from the site above. It must drain well . When making cuttings you must have the sun or a professional light. I use a 1000 watt light that is 8 feet above my cuttings. The light must be on 18-24 hours per day and no less. The humidity must be above 75% so a dome or cover must be over the cutting.. The temperature must be between 70-80 degrees . All of the things above are a must! Take a cutting and put it in a glass of water or a cut in half coke two liter that has a aquarium bubbler in it bubbling slow for more oxygen in the water. You want the water to be about 3-4 inches up the cutting and the cutting should be 6 inches total. The water inside the glass must be mixed with Oliva’s Cloning Solution (per instructions on the bottle)which can be bought at the web site above. The water must be PH balanced to 5.9 - 6.2 by adding a product named UP or a product named DOWN which can be bought at the website above. More than likely your tap water is around 7 ph so you will be using a small amount of DOWN to bring it down to the correct 5.9 – 6.2 range. They sell electric meters to test the ph quick or small test kits that are cheaper .Add the Oliva’s cloning solution to the water before you test for the PH. Always keep your cover over your cutting keeping the humidity in. If you notice the water getting low in your glass you want to add more water that is mixed and balanced as described above. Keep your strong light on 18-24 hours and the temps correct and it will root in 2-3 weeks . This method is a small version of what I do and works 100% but must be followed to a "T" . Every part is important especially the humidity and ph balance. Try two cuttings first before you do too many to get the hang of it. |

Re: Growing kratom plants
A few Kratom trees started from seed in march 2007. Picture from Aug. 2007, not much growth in the first year. Cloning is a breeze in a drip system, just cut off a growing tip and put into the system, SWIM don't use rooting hormone. |

Re: Growing kratom plants
SWIM is growing from seed. from what he can tell they are the red veined variety. SWIM found germination from one pod to be tremedous. there were about 60 seedlings, but mosty died, SWIM has three. They are growing tremendously fast inside a plastic hood to keep in the moisture.;
SWIM believes that once established from their initial minute status, they are easy tropicals to grow, providing you keep up the humidity. SWIM expects to have 2 m plants by fall. The plants below are about 2 months old, under fluorescent lights, soon to be moved to MH 400 WATT ![]()

Re: Growing kratom plants
good ways to get high alcaloids yield from cultivated plants:
1-first the time of harvesting is quite important, the level of alcaloid does vary with plant life cycles, and at the same time localisation of highest alcaloid levels will move from one part of the plant to another. 2-also, as said alpha stress will stimulate alcaloids production ways of stressing the plant: place a plastic bag over it (suffocation), and leave it there for a few days, not giving her any water nor fertilizer (deprivation), you might even place it in a dark room. 3-I don't know much about it but if you ask a horticulturist, he might tell you everything about how to use moon cycles to grow your plant faster and stronger. The moon does attracts fluids, and it will help the sap of the plant going up into the leaves (alcaloids beeing in the sap this is good for ya). So if your plant is cultivated indoor, then you might place it outdoor occasionally so the plant will benefit from some 'lunar events' (notably fullmoon/april moon I heard) ...again, a professional horticulturist would explain you better that I do how full moon, ascending moon, and other lunar events affect plants (I do not know about the all stuff but I know this is teached seriously in gardening classes so that means it is no joke) |
