Question SSRIs and Opiates

Hey, so SWIM is currently perscribed to 200mg of Zoloft and 100mg of Welbutrin daily. She has also recently begun using oxycodone, and uses around 60mg for recreational use. SWIM was wondering if anyone has a similar situation and could possibly enlighten me on some of the risks with mixing SSRIs and other antidepressants with opiates, cause it would not be a good idea for SWIM to ask her doctor.

Re: SSRIs and Opiates

SWIM believes the main risk, or at least one of the main risks, is serotonin syndrome. SWIM has taken many combinations of drugs that increase serotonergic activity without ever experiencing serotonin syndrome, including oxycodone while taking effexor xr, lexapro, and elavil, but SWIY's body could respond much much differently.

Re: SSRIs and Opiates

I'm not sure how opiates are supposed to trigger serotonin syndrome in people taking SSRI antidepressants when they do not directly effect serotonin receptors?

Re: SSRIs and Opiates

The general consensus is that SSRI's and opiates are generally safe although everyone reacts different but SWIM don't believe most opiates will cause serotonin syndrome with the exception of a few that SWIM forgets but I believe tramadol is one because it acts on serotonin. If one googles SSRI's and opiates they will see that like SWIM stated most people generally believe it to have little drug interactions between the two minus a few such as tramadol and possibley demerol but no oxycodone should generally be safe but make work against the anti-depressants because SWIYou might be depressed when coming down and the day after enless they do it again.
