A man "coming down" from a four-day drug binge allegedly "tripped out" and fired more than 30 rounds from an AK-47 inside his east Flagstaff home early Sunday morning.
Nobody was injured, but the man was arrested on several felony charges in connection with the incident. According to Flagstaff police reports, a neighbor was taking out his trash at about 6 a.m. when he heard a commotion coming from the man's house on the 3400 block of North Wayman Street. The neighbor said he heard what sounded like items being thrown around and broken, then several shots fired in rapid succession followed by a person screaming.
Responding officers also heard a man yelling for help as they approached the house, and an officer entered the home with his gun at the ready to see the man with his back toward him. When the man turned around, the officer saw that he was highly agitated and had a large kitchen knife in each hand. He dropped them on command.
Officers said the house was in disarray, with broken furniture, shattered glass, knives, drug paraphernalia, bullet holes, spent casings and live rounds throughout. One officer estimated there were more than 30 scattered spent casings, reports stated. An AK- 47 rifle was found leaning against the shattered glass back door.
The man admitted to firing the rifle, saying he "was shooting at shadows and people of the night," reports stated. He changed his story several times, once saying he was awakened by somebody breaking into his house, but he then said he made that up.
Police did not find anybody else inside the home, but did find a dog in a bedroom. The dog appeared frightened but unhurt, and was taken to an animal shelter.
The man said he had taken various drugs over the previous four days and had not slept during that time. He admitted to taking methamphetamine, "angel dust" (PCP) and a sleeping pill, reports stated. He said he "tripped out" and didn't remember anything else.
He was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center for evaluation before being booked into the Coconino County jail.
John Bagwell, 36, faces charges of endangerment, discharging a weapon within city limits, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana and disorderly conduct with a weapon.
