CWE - A Question or two.
Hey,
SWIM is looking to do his first ever CWE on om Nurofen Plus tablets - which contain codeine and ibuprofen in a 12.8 / 200mg combo. SWIM is looking to use 10 tablets for his first time, giving a target dose of 100mg of codeine - allowing for up to 20mg to be lost during the process. This will equate to 2000mg (2g) of ibuprofen if it screws up. 1. SWIM was wondering why you need to use hot water to dissolve the tablets and then cool the water. Why can't you just use cold water in the first place, since codeine phosphate is more soluble in cold water than it is in hot water and ibuprofen less soluble in cold water, so even less ibuprofen will dissolve? 2. SWIM would also like to know about the end solution. Should it be clear or milky? Does milky = more ibuprofen or is codeine solution naturally milky? 3. Finally, SWIM would like to know of any issues that people have had simply using cloth / t-shirts as a filter. SWIM is worried because coffee filters are very fragile and he would like to squeeze the leftover sludge for the last few drops of codeine. Thanks!! |

Re: CWE - A Question or two.
Well first of all although I'm happy to help try using the search engine next time as all of this has been covered before.
First of all the hot water is just to dissolve the tablets more easily since the bigger the chunks of Ibuprofen, the more codeine that's trapped inside. So before dissolving make sure to crush the tablets as fine as you can and that will improve your yield considerably. Quote:

ROBO'S REFINED CWE You'll need: -water(preferably bottled) -a baker or other container capable of measuring ml. -a funnel -tissue paper or as SWIJulian suggested woman's stocking -coffee filters or preferably lab filters Okay so here's the procedure: 1-Heat the water to about 30C, just above room temp.Pur the desired amount of water in the baker or glass (swim uses 100ml for 20 tablets, also works well for up to 30 tablets) 2-Crush the tablets until they're a fine powder (the finer the better) and add them to the water, stir until you can see no more chunks. 3-While you wait for the tablets to dissolve wet the paper tissue or the cloth you were talking about and place it on the funnel.Wet it first so it doesn't absorb your codeine. 4-All the tablets should be dissolved by now, check for chunks in the bottom of the glass. Place the funnel on top of a tall glass and filter the mix through it. After it's done pur a tiny little bit of water in the baker with the residue ad pur it on the filter, this will ensure that you get all the codeine out. 5-Discard the tissue paper and wash the funnel and the baker. Now pur the filtered solution into the baker and look at how many ml of water are left. This will give you an aproximate idea on your yield. 6-Put the baker in the freezer, and wait until you see a little bit of ice on top. 7-While you wait for the solution to cool, place the lab or coffee filters in the funnel making sure they're wet before filtering. 8-Filter the solution through the coffee/lab filter. If it takes too long you might wanna filter inside the fridge so that it stays cool. 9-The filtered solution should be as clear as water,Drink and enjoy. You might wanna wait until you have an empty stomach as this greatly potentiates the codeine. Swim thinks the best chaser is Diet 7up but that's just him. ![]() Hope that answers your questions, Robo. |

Re: CWE - A Question or two.
Thanks Robo!
Sorry for not searching, I had a quick flick through the codeine forum and thought it'd be faster to ask specifically what I was interested in. I like your idea of doing the double filter. It's good I asked cause I was going to go ahead and filter using only the t-shirt, so I probably would have been taking in a fair bit of ibuprofen. Although saying that, I have read a few guides were they ONLY use a cloth or t-shirt and they seem fine, but then again it could just be morons who wrote that. Cheers. 3xtr4 added 69 Minutes and 13 Seconds later... Sorry Robo, one last question. If I'm in a bit of a rush and I don't want to wait for the water to cool, can I do the CWE simply by added the very fine powder to cold (5 C) water, instead of to hot water then cooling it? I have a grinding device that can grind the pills very nicely, so would it be OK to do this? The science of it works out in my mind, I just thought I'd ask an experienced user before going ahead. Re: CWE - A Question or two.
Well yeah, you could do that but from swim's experience when the powder is added to cold water it forms chunks and it gets very, very hard to mix them well. This will affect your yield considerably since not all of the codeine will get dissolved.
If you want to speed up the process of cooling it down, a really effective method is to place the CWE in a plastic tray (like the stuff you'd put leftover food in) or anything really wide like a pyrex dish or whatever and then place in the freezer. This idea has saved swim so much time since 100ml of water go from 35C-45C to having chunks of ice in like 5min.And remember that the water should be above room temperature since even at room temp swim has had trouble getting the powder to dissolve. please don't hesitate to ask, Robo |

Re: CWE - A Question or two.
Ah I see, thanks for the reply. I'll probably just do as you say and use warm water first, I doubt 20mins in the fast freeze of my freezer will kill me.
Highest codeine dose I've done so far is about 50mg, will try about 100mg and see how that goes. Taking that 50mg has always been by downing 5 Nurofen Plus, 800mg of ibuprofen. Always gave me a sore stomach in the morning, I'll let that be the judge of whether or not my extraction got out most of the nasties. 3xtr4 added 1251 Minutes and 23 Seconds later... Hey, I've been doing a lot of searching on the forums and people keep saying they've had trouble doing a CWE on Nurofen Plus - 200mg / 12.8mg of ibuprofen and codeine. Why? Ibuprofen is more soluble than paracetamol. I'm gonna use about 9 pills for my first CWE but I thought I'd get this cleared up first. I have 500mg / 8mg of co-codamol too, but getting 100mg of codeine would take about 13-15 pills, or 7500mg of paracetamol (APAP) if it goes wrong = liver damage / death. I was thinking that I'd use a t-shirt to filter the big chunks of ibuprofen out then use a coffee filter, so that the big chunks don't clog the filter. Sound good? Re: CWE - A Question or two.
Sounds perfect, but as you already said people usually have trouble with the ibuprofen preparations so swim would recommend using the co-codamol.Another reason to use co-codamol is that ibuprofen is a lot more toxic to the kidneys in high doses than paracetamol to the liver so it should be safer.
About getting poisoned if it goes wrong, don't even worry about it.If the solution is cloudy, filter through 2 coffee filters and make sure it's cold while filtering. If it's clear or only a little cloudy (use your own judgment on the latter) then you shouldn't worry about it. Good luck, robo |
