Addiction - Need advice on quitting tar

My friend has been smoking tar on and off for over a year and a half, and was able to taper when he went on vacation to visit his family out of necessity once, but this time hasn't been as easy on him with a taper (he's been getting pretty sick just going down in dose.) He is smoking about a half a gram a day of what is probably pretty bad black tar, and needs to stop, for monetary reasons, he doesn't want to lose his job, etc. He's been thinking of tapering down quickly this time by going down to .2 tomorrow, .1 the next day, and 2 small hits to help with the last day. This time he also has the help of 7 - 10 mg methadone's, 10 mg of oxycontin, and 10 mg of vicodin. He needs some advice on how to best taper with the least amount of side effects or he may lose his job if he's all dope sick at work. What would be a good plan for him, he tried tapering last week and as he got down in dose (before he was even off) he was getting sick. How can he make the best use of the meds he has to come down. What should he use first as he gets to a low dose of the H to keep him from getting sick. What should be his plan for using the medications at his disposal to bring him down and off the H with minimal sickness. He and I both thank everyone very much for any advice given as it will help him to keep a job that he's very happy at. I've posted before to try and help him, and never heard any response, so please everyone, help me help my buddy out so he can keep working with me and he can regain his life that he had before he began using.
