Re: Alkaloid content and identification of Trichocereus angelesii?

Cute specimen!

Is this specimen growing with a crawling habit, or is there something wonky going on with it (too much/too little water, nutritive problems)?

The other trichos I've dreamed about were very upright, although desert-tropicals gives "Basally branching, sprawling or semi-erect dull green stem" as the growth habit from angelesii. The photos I've been able to find weren't terribly informative.

Actually now I've noted that I have nothing helpful to say :P But as I've typed it all already, it will be posted!

Good luck.

The main alk'd found in the Red torch is dimethyl-Mescaline-a.k.a Trichocerine.
Depending on how much time (and diligence) as Some-one is prepaired to devote. The number of filtration processes (at least 3 is needed, 5 is the optimum) also affects how much product can be extracted. Soly can expect to get as much as 50mls of d-meth per Kilogram of Cactus. But remember, this is under professional lab conditions etc. It (the %) also varies with the qualities of the Plant, soil and nutrients the Plant has taken up. A lot of effort is required with the red T so I'd stick to the mescal Cac if I was to do this but I have absolutely no intention of doing anythink with Cactii. Except avoiding them and ther thorns like the Plague.
Good luck to anybody not of my personal persausion!
Hope this is helpfull.

Oh, and re; the Id, it's difficult from such a pic, when it bloooms, post another Pic and I may be able it help you there! p.s I work in a retail nursury and am reasonablely good at identifying Cactii. (IMHO) Cheers!

Oh! #2, that 50ml estimate is "wet" product. Cactii are around 95% H2O so 5mls is prob' a morer reasonable estimate. From such a small plant, don't expect too much! btw, Some that is NOT you will need to obtain/create Ether or Chloroform for proper filtration/extraction. ......Good luck! (More trouble than it's worth, (imho)
