TEK - Voltaren Forte (Codeine + Diclofenac) , extraction - freebasing

SWIM has access to over the counter Voltaren Forte which contains equal amounts of Codeine and Diclofenac (50mg of each).

He know diclofenac is slightly water soluble, and rather insoluble in acids. He knows codeine is very soluble in both water and acids.

So he has been extracting the codeine by simply addinc citric acid to water and add the crusehd pills powder, stirr it for a while, then let it sit for a while so soids fall to bottom, then filter the solution and save the filtered solution and discard the solids.

3 pills extracted this way gives nice buzz, just drinking down the solution.

Though he want to go a step further and freebase the codeine, any suggestions? Could he use sodium carbonate or calcium hydroxide to freebase it?

His codeine is Codeine Sulphate and he heard smoking freebase codeine can be nice, and after all codeine is part of opium which is smoked nicely and he assume some of the effects are due to the codeine too. Can codeine be smoked "as is" without freebasing it then, considering this? He is not sure in what form the codeine is in its natural state in opium, anyone?

After experimenting some SWIM found the following:

Extracting as described above, and save the codeine water solution after filtering it well with a fine filter.

Then take another glass, put a teaspoon or two of sodium carbonate in it, and add some water. SWIM filled the glass with around 1/3 parts water and then mixed well. It was stirred until the sodium carbonate was dissolved and the water was clear.

A 5ml syringe was used to suck up the alkaline water (the sodium carbonate solution), and this was shot into the codeine water with the syringe. Precipitation started and crystals (codeine freebase solids) were formed. Another 5ml of sodium carbonate solution was added while the codeine solution was stirred and more precipitates formed, and these were white and cloudy almost looking like snow flowing around in the glass. After sitting a while the codeine freebase solids settled at the bottom of the glass. Filtration was done and the solid codeine freebase was scraped up from the filter and saved and dried (Do not dry above 60 degrees Celsius as this destroys the codeine). The filtered solution was injected with some more of the sodium carbonate solution and a little more codeine freebase solids formed which also were filtered and saved. Then the solutions were discarded.

The freebase codeine was mixed with tobacco and simply smoked in a rolled cigarette which gave a nice buzz somewhat similar to that of opium or heroin though of course not equally intense or euphoric yet still quite nice.
