Percocet vs Norco?

I fucked my rib up pretty bad from bronchitis so my doc gave me a script for percocet and I Was just wondering how it compares to norco as far as potency/strength/feeling and pain killing effect.. im sure it'll do the trick but are they on par with each other? which is stronger?

Re: Percocet vs Norco?

First off, I understand that it is prescribed to you and therefore it is legal for you to take it, but just to be on the safe side, please use SWIM (Someone Who Isn't Me) or say "my friend" or "this guy I know" or something like that. It's good to get in the habit of that since self incrimination is not allowed here.

With that said, what mg dosage are the Percocets?

Norco is just a brand name for Hydrocodone Bitartrate and Acetaminophen. They come in 10/325mg's (10 mg's of Hydrocodone and 325 mg's of Acetaminophen) and 7.5/325 mg's. They are basically just the same thing as Lortabs or Vicodin - it's all Hydrocodone w/ Acetaminophen. While the brand name "Norcos" only come in 2 different strengths, Lortabs come in 4 different strengths, I believe.

Percocet is Oxycodone w/ Acetaminophen.
It comes in 6 different strengths:
2.5/325
5/325
7.5/325
7.5/500
10/325
10/650

Oxy
codone is a little stronger than Hydrocodone. SWIM feels that he has to take about 10mg's of Hydrocodone to equal to 7.5 mg's of Oxycodone. Though he has read somewhere that 10 mg's of Hydrocodone is actually equal to about 6.6.mg's of Oxycodone. He is not sure how true this is though.

So basically if the percocet is the same amount of mg's as the Norco's you were taking, then yes it will definitely be a little stronger.

Their actions are almost identicle to each other with the exception that Oxycodone, for most people seems to be a little more euphoric. As far as therapeutically, which one will kill the pain more, SWIM is gonna have to say Oxycodone does just a little bit of a better job (for him anyway).

Hope this helps answer your questions.

Re: Percocet vs Norco?

No need to use SWIM if it is used as prescribed & there is no discussion of using it in conjunction with unprescribed substances.

Re: Percocet vs Norco?

battonbutterfly: I think your reply is off topic, but in the interest of harm reduction, you cannot take more than 1000mg of APAP (aka Tylenol aka acetaminophen) per 4-6 hours so that limits SWIY to two of those pills unless you want to risk serious liver damage.

Re: Percocet vs Norco?

SWIM thinks that the above information is incorrect and that the safe maximum dose for APAP is 2000mg at one dose and 3000mg daily. And going over that dose isn't automatically "risking serious liver damage". SWIM knows that APAP isn't good for the liver in the long run and can be really toxic at higher doses but SWIM thinks that this hazard should not be overstated. Harm reduction, in SWIM's opinion, means giving accurate information and not overstating the dangers.

SWIM does however recommend doing a cold water extraction (CWE) if someone is going to ingest products containing more than 1500mg of APAP because APAP at higher doses causes SWIM some uncomfortable nausea. And if you are going to use APAP containing products recretionally on a regular bases you should always do a CWE so to not unnecessarily strain your liver.

Re: Percocet vs Norco?

Petri, please research before posting - thinking is not good enough with a drug like paracetamol.

Maximum safe dose is 4grams (4000mg) in 24 hours, in 1gram (1000gram) doses every 6 hours. Going over that dose may not automatically lead to liver damage, but the risk is certainly there & should not be downplayed just because there is no guarantee.

There is no overstating the risks of paracetamol - fatal reactions have occurred with accidental overdoses of as little 500mg above the recommended dose

Chemist suffering from flu is killed by half a paracetamol tablet - this story outlines a case a woman who died after taking 8.5 grams (16.5 tablets) over 2 days. Paracetamol has a narrow therapeutic window, & should be treat with respect.

From http://www.medic8.com/medicines/Paracetamol.html

Quote:
Toxic dose of paracetamol
The toxic dose of paracetamol is highly variable. In adults, single doses above 10 grams or 150 mg/kg have a reasonable likelihood of causing toxicity. Toxicity can also occur when multiple smaller doses within 24 hours exceeds these levels, or even with chronic ingestion of doses as low as 4 g/day, and death with as little as 6 g/day.
In children acute doses above 200 mg/kg could potentially cause toxicity. This higher threshold is largely due to children having relatively larger kidneys and livers than adults and hence being more tolerant of paracetamol overdose than adults. Acute paracetamol overdose in children rarely causes illness or death with chronic supratherapeutic doses being the major cause of toxicity in children.
Since paracetamol is often included in combination with other drugs, it is important to include all sources of paracetamol when checking a person's dose for toxicity. In addition to being sold by itself, paracetamol may be included in the formulations of various analgesics and cold/flu remedies as a way to increase the pain-relieving properties of the medication. To prevent overdoses, one should read medication labels carefully for the presence of paracetamol and check with a pharmacist before using over-the-counter medications.
It is worth noting that mortality rates among accidental overdoses are considerably higher than for deliberate overdoses, as those taking deliberate overdoses are more likely to seek medical attention within the time that the antidote will be effective (http://www.scienceblog.com/community.../20021040.html)

Re: Percocet vs Norco?

im surprised no one has said this but:
If the norcs are the 10/325s, and the percs are the 5/500's, get the norcs. if swiy can get 10 mg percs, do that. and hydrocodone is roughly 4/5's as potent as oxy. 8/10. so theres your answer. if its 7.5 norcs and 5 mg percs, swim would say get whichever one contains less tylonal. and swim always thought the toxic level of acetamenaphin was 4000mg. but some people take a lot more, much to their livers distress and dysfunction.
