Question Problem with browning Salvia

Swim has recently started growing salvia in a clay pot in the kitchen. Swim got that plant as a baby and re-potted using a wicking system so it continually sucks water out by itself. Swim also uses a humidity tent on top of it, held up by wooden rods. Since swim has had it, it has continually been browning along the tips. Recently, the browning and dryness has been spreading the the center of the leaves and swim has been losing the leaves. Swim is very worried that it's slowly dying and doesn't know what she's doing wrong. It gets plenty of water and isn't in direct sunlight. Does anyone know what can be going on with it? Swim has grown quite attached to it and would hate to lose it.

Re: Problem with browning Salvia

SWIM was mailed about 15 plants bare root from a friend. SWIM potted all up as soon as they arrived and now has one pot with 3 of those rooted cuttings growing very well under flourescent lights and no humidity tent. SWIM just mists them about every other day. The rest of the cuttings either died or all of the leaves have fallen off and just green stems remain with a little growth re-starting.

My first thought about SWIY's plant is that it was too dry because of the leaf tip drying, but if that continues up the leaf and the whole leaf dies then SWIM thinks that it may be too humid and rot is taking place. SWIY should try reducing the humidity gradually.

SWIM's plants are drying on the tips only and that is because of lack of humidity, other than that they are growing vigerously.

Re: Problem with browning Salvia

It has a humidity tent, but it might not be a sufficient one. Swim placed 5 wooden rods into the pot along the perimeter. Then put plastic wrap all around it. Swim was trying to acclimate it to a less humid environment, so swim stopped tying the plastic wrap all the way to the top and left it with the top open for a few months. It was fine till a few weeks ago when it started dramatically browning and drooping. Then swim decided to cover the top back up with a plastic bag. Swim probably needs a more sturdy humidity tent because it really doesn't feel or look very humid in there at all.

Any suggestions please???

Re: Problem with browning Salvia

grandmas salvia have lost ther leaves int he past, then they grow back. Dont know if this is the case for you or not... Just as long as the stems dotn brown your leaves should grow back. There many threads here on growing salvia/peoples browging problems,id suggest reading what has worked for others.

Re: Problem with browning Salvia

Just 2 things to solve your problems: proper watering and do not exceed humidity

SWIM is an happy grower and he stopped brown leaves only checking this 2. Keep in mind Sally need at least 3 weeks to get habit of her new home.
