Any swimmers here into home distilling?

My fictional friend likes to brew his own, but is branching out into distilling. He's done a couple of runs using a big saucepan with a smaller bown inside it, but has recently purchased a smartstill (table-top distilling device). He in the future plans on having a go at building something a bit bigger too.

Any other swimmers with a similar interest in distillation?

Edit: and could the alcohol forum perhaps benefit from a distillation tag? I note it has a brewing one

Re: Any swimmers here into home distilling?

SWIM is in a similar position to SWI-Sven99: getting ready to move from fermentation to distillation. He has a stainless steel still ready to go when he sorts out his hotplate. He just needs to get some wines made to distill.

SWIM can't wait - to produce good quality spirits yourself surely is going to be one of the best feelings ever.

Re: Any swimmers here into home distilling?

Fishy's little shop-bought still has arrived and he's made his first moonshine from some home made wine he wasn't too keen on - first batch came out around 35-37% with a nice fruity aroma. Very exciting!

he could distil it again but he is quite pleased with the taste

Grandma used to use a old stainless steal cow milker collection thingy, heat tape rubber stoppers a thermometer and copper tube spiraled in a 5 gallon bucket full of ice/water. Wasnt the best set up but it gave her the desired results she wanted!

My imaginary friends' is a smart still - sold as a water cooler but designed to function as a pot-still. It has the advantage of being air cooled, so he can set it up in his room without all and sundry knowing about it.

Re: Any swimmers here into home distilling?

SWIM has the big stainless steel mother you can get over the net. It operates in either reflux of pot modes depending on how you set it up. SWIM (that guy again) was wondering if anyone else in the U.K. has one of these and if so, how did you solve the hotplate issue?

Anyone got any recipes they've tried that worked? What, in an ideal world, would be the spirit SWIY would like to make?

Re: Any swimmers here into home distilling?

My skunk fancies having a go at making absinthe some time soon. He also fancies making a molasses wash and distilling it into white rum. But he has other projects on the go before any of that will get done.

homedistiller.org has alot of good general advice for recipes - and pretty much everything else.

Re: Any swimmers here into home distilling?

swim just got his first successful product from his homemade still he filtered it through charcoal several times, bottled it in a barrel full of strawberrys for several months and then found his delish product.. swim says he feels taste buds die on the way down as he diluted it bery little.. said strawberrys are kept in a jar with minimal shine and lit on fire and eaten to entertain swims geusts.. swim plans to make his peach moonshine next time around then maybe try blackberrys
