GHB in the fridge

Swim recently had a small 3 oz sized bottle of GHB, swim was noted that the viscosity would heighten along with the chemical taste and could possibly be more pure.

Anyway, swim had a large tacobell cup filled with ice and water. The small 3 oz bottle was halfway filled with GHB, and swim left the bottle halfway submerged in the freezing water.

Maybe after 15 to 20 minutes, crystals were forming along the side, and mostly the bottom of the bottle. The entire solution was never set to completely freeze, but more stalagtite-like structures formed in various locations thoughout the bottle.

Swim is wondering what exactly is going on. Something is freezing but swim cannot clearly identify the crystalline substance. (These crystals broke down after 20 to 30 minutes back to liquid form, floating very slowly in the rest of the solution, much like a rock sinking to the bottom of a bottle of syrup.)

The question is, what partition is crystallizing? Water? Something else? And what exactly is it that ISNT freezing? Could this be a higher purity partition than the entire solution, or lower?

It left swim slightly puzzled having never experienced this sight before, but still curious as to whether this affect can be harnessed or avoided.

Discuss.

Re: GHB in the fridge

My thoughts:

Put a half empty bottle of water in the fridge. The next day, you'll see some water has evaporated and is covering the entire upper half of the bottle.

I'd say the same goes for your gbh. Water evaporated, making your solution more pure, hence the crystals.

I could be wrong, though.

Re: GHB in the fridge

That could just as easily be h20 in the air inside the bottle condensing and freezing, finer particles of almost anything freeze quicker, burn faster, etc etc because each particle is being treated as a separate and more miniscule version of the solution, and since theyre so small they contain much less matter needed to convert into a solid from a liquid, or vice versa.

Maybe swim should do it again and take a few photos. Try and imagine cm. long rock crystal like structures growing from the bottom of a jar of water, or buy a stick of rock candy, the comparison is uncanny.

My intial guess is the water. Water loaded with ice is 0 deg. cel. so submerging the liquid end of the bottle should reach 0 as well, and stay there. Anything crystallizing into a solid must have a freezing point of 0 or higher since the water is never lower than 0. Anything like ghb, which freezes at ~-20 deg. cel., SHOULD maintain a liquid state, but Swim cant be sure because any cutting agent thats been used in the solution isnt known. More than likely its the water, swim hasnt witnessed any backwards-azeotropic like affects in any solution before, but swim could be mistaken.

Re: GHB in the fridge

NaGHB at room temperature is a white solid with a wax/soap type consistency.

People who purchase street NaGHB are actually buying a solution of H2O and NaGHB, at whichever dilution the manufacturer/seller has decided on.

If this solution is chilled the excess H2O is the first thing to freeze. Don't forget that the Na in NaGHB stands for Sodium and salt water has a lower freezing temp than tap water.

There should be *no* chemical taste. If a dose is added to a small glass of cold water, there is only likely to be a slight saline taste, if anything.

Chemical smells and tastes usually signify that the dilute NaGHB solution has unreacted GBL in it. Either from an incomplete reaction or from the solution losing its slight alkalinity and becoming just acidic enough for the GBL to "fall out" of the NaGHB solution, usually to reach an equillibrium GBL/GHB.

As mentioned before, anybody who insists on wanting to use an NaGHB solution purchased from a third party would do well to boil it to 150c in order to evap all the excess H2O and then, carefully, pour the molten NaGHB out onto a metal baking tray and then let it harden. This will leave only the solid NaGHB which can then be diluted to requirements.

If there is unreacted GBL still present, what happens to it if the above procedure is followed? Does it boil off before 150c?

Re: GHB in the fridge

If there is sufficient NaOH in the solution it will convert the GBL to GHB.

Only the GHB salt (NaGHB) will form a white solid out of the above process.

Re: GHB in the fridge

Ha, well much to my dismay, I've come to find out the entire solution is GBL, from what swims buddy told him. And swim is getting large plastic bottles refilled constantly. 1.75 liters to be exact. Swim doesnt know where its coming from, or if its being synthed by someone. BUT, swims had it filled twice now. For free. LOL. The hilarity in the story is the relation of the source to swim. Anyway, swim prepares to get some NaOH, heat to remove any possible water content, and slowly add in an NaOH solution until the reaction is complete. Finish getting out the water and swim'll have the molten right there.

GBL in the fridge then. ...wtfZ? DISCUSS :
