Amitriptyline(elavil) sleepiness side effect still persists...

I took one elavil pill (25mg) about 6 days ago to help me go to sleep since I have tinnitus(basically a noise inside your ears that you hear 24/7) as prescribed by an ENT specialist I visited.

Anyway, ever since then, I've had the constant urge to go to sleep. The first few days I slept maybe 14-17 hours a day. Right now, I force myself to stay up to be productive at work but this is getting ridiculous. I've tried drinking lots of water, tried energy drinks(which make my tinnitus worse), but this sleepiness hasn't gone away.

Is this normal for taking 1 pill even after 6 days have passed? I really can't afford to be sleepy all the time, I work around jet engines and machinery for a living that can easily kill me and/or others if I'm not alert.

Sorry this is coming so late... the average is about 1 week, but probably up to two. If its affecting your life in a harmful way, then dont deal with it, check out other options with your doctor. But, it does not mean elavil has no possibility for success, it just might need more time (the inverse is also possible, your build may just not be compatible)

I'm done with drugs/pills/medication, I simply can't afford to deal with the side-effects since my job is extremely hazardous. Thanks for the response though.
