Question Psychedelics and Lithium

SWIM has very extensive experience with psychedelics, LSD, mushrooms, 2C-X's, DXM, N20, DMT, 5-meo, Bufotonin, Ketamine, MDMA, amanitas, ect. all in extensive combinations, and the farthest SWIM has ever been was with Lithium and LSD and Lithium and mushrooms. These three trips were by far the most powerful and life changing experiences of SWIMS life. i wonder what went on in SWIMS brain those nights, seeing as lithium and psychedelics are basically opposite in their effects. To my knowledge our understanding of the way lithium functions in the brain is little to none. Could anybody make an educated guess as to what was happening in SWIMS brain on a chemical level and how this may have translated into the extreme psychological experience? Or why this combination is so ego shattering?

SWIMs girlfriend at the time and two other friends arrived in the morning on Columbus Day. They planned to take the acid at swims house since they had no school and swims mom would be at work all day. This was swims second time takings LSD. swim had already taken his Lithium and two tabs before everyone arrived, each of swims friends took one and swims girlfriend was the sober ‘sitter’ since she was hesitant to try LSD. The drug took hold fast and colors became heavily distorted within twenty minutes of ingestion. swim had no idea the drug was reacting with swims medication, and at first swims friends thought that swim must be over exaggerating. they sat out in the grass for a few moments to relax. The sound of the wind in the trees became transformed into the roar of a great waterfall. “Do you guys hear that water?” swim said. “No” they told swim he must be imaging it. Soon SWIM was struck by the idea that everyone else could hear everything SWIM was thinking. This may be because SWIM lacked the ability to separate my internal dialogue from what SWIM meant to say out loud. The lines between internal and external started to vanish. At this point SWIM became mute and did not say anything for about four hours.
SWIM got up from the lawn and started to wander. SWIM directed the group with strange hand movements and did not speak. This is very evident of a condition called a ‘dissociative fugue state’ which is documented to occur when Lithium is taken in conjunction with LSD. The Dissociative fugue is characterized by a complete abandonment of personal identity, memories, personality and other identifying characteristics of individuality. The subject may have the impulse to wander and be completely unaware of what they’re doing. The condition is similar to amnesia but is spontaneous in nature and usually not permanent. SWIM think this condition provided SWIM with the most transpersonal experience of SWIMS life as the boundaries of my ego were completely destroyed and SWIM was forced to merge with the outside world.
Soon SWIM was completely lost in the woods and SWIMS friends realized SWIM wasn’t kidding and really had no idea where SWIM was going. SWIMs friends lead SWIM back to the apartment, and as they walked back the intensity of SWIMs condition escalated. SWIM was struck with an apocalyptic terror and thought that SWIM smelled ammonia. Somehow SWIM ended up in the car and SWIMs girlfriend drove them to the park. SWIM don’t remember the car ride at all. When they arrived at the park swims hallucinations were so vivid that swim couldn’t see the world around him at all. swim was lost in fluxuating light and vortexes of energy. As swims friends spoke their voices sounded chopped up as if they spoke through a fan. At this point swims emotions began to swing back and forth between two extremes at a startling speed. swim is told that swims facial expressions oscillated between terror and bliss in intervals of only a couple minutes.
swim remember vividly one feeling that lasted only a moment although to me it seemed to extend forever on some other plane. swim felt himself merge with the entire universe; energy seemed to pull swim up towards the sky. swim had the feeling of eternal bliss. This feeling was so self evident, so undeniable, so divine and infinite that swim would never again be able to deny the boundless potential of the universe. swim was thrown far beyond the boundaries of mortality. Thoughts like ‘will swim ever come down’ or ‘is swim dying’ seemed petty and meaningless in the light of this experience. This blissful moment was of course followed by waves of pure horror as swim watched himself vanish into a churning oblivion. swim felt so ashamed that swim had doubted this infinite power for so long. It was a cleansing of sorts and forced mswim to verify a force inside hiomself that swim now think of as swims spirit.
swims friends soon brought swim back to the apartment because swim was unable to be in public. The next episode of the trip was the strangest and most unexplainable. swims girlfriend helped swim into the shower to calm swim down. swim was shaking and could only say “Can we please calm down guys” over and over. swim undressed and got into the shower. The patterns on the tiles of the bath flickered violently and swim had the sensation of being electrocuted by some cosmic energy. swims body started to twitch and swim think that this may have been a mild seizure considering other reports of this drug combination usually describe seizures. What happened next I have yet to fully understand. As swim got out of the shower swims girlfriend helped swim tie a towel around swims waste. swim became a whirling dervish, a member of the Turkish religious order. Visions from other cultures around the world and throughout history possessed me. swim had a vision of a swastika and began to move swims arms in a certain way that made it rotate. It was then that the name of Carl Jung entered swims mind, the first solid word that came to swim. The swastika became a three dimensional knot which would represent a Celtic like symbol. Frantically swim tried to draw the pattern on a pamphlet with a sharpie. Later swim discovered the swastika was an ancient Buddhist symbol of unity.

swim did mushrooms with Lithium on two other occasions with similar results, once at a campfire in the woods and once at the museum of science in Boston ( that was very overwhelming) Sometimes swim is tempted to repeat the experiment but it seems like a very dangerous idea.

Re: Psychedelics and Lithium

SWIM was prescribed lithium and took it everyday as he was told to. SWIM loves psychedelics and had never really had a bad trip when he was not taking lithium. SWIM took mushrooms and LSD during the 1 and half month he was taking his lithium one time each. He experienced extreme depression and had a very difficult time enjoying the substances. From SWIM's experiences I would not recommend mixing psychedelics and Lithium.

Re: Psychedelics and Lithium

LSD, very simply stated, binds with serotonin at the 5-HT receptor in the brain. LSD has the unique ability to bind to the 5-HT receptor while simultaneously binding to one or more other parts on the membrane in the immediate vicinity. It takes glutamate in order for this to happen properly. Lithium keeps brain cells from being overstimulated by glutamate. LSD also can act either agonistically or antagonistically at central 5-HT. Perhaps lithium's role in glutamate levels has something to do with deciding LSD's ag or antag ability. Although I could not find any evidence on the effects or pharmacology of lithium(specifically) combined with LSD. I did however find evidence of a study that showed mice under the influence of LSD who were given a secondary drug that targeted and stimulated glutamate receptors, was found to have a neutralizing effect on the LSD. SWIM has personally experienced taking LSD while taking Eskalith and found it to be quite unpleasant. Fortunately, the effects did not last as long as an average trip. SWIY may want to check out the following link. Sorry, it seems that I do not have enough clout as of yet to insert links. Just contact me for the site information. I hope this helped.
