Alberta health officials are warning drug users that cocaine being sold on
the street could be laced with a toxic and potentially lethal substance.
Seven people from communities across the province have developed a
condition known as agranulocytosis, which leaves patients unable to fight
off infections.

It's believed the cases are the result of exposure to levamisole, a
chemical compound used to treat intestinal worms in humans and animals.

The levamisole was likely added to the cocaine to increase the weight of
the drug --and its dollar value--when sold on the street to unsuspecting
buyers, said Dr. Gerry Predy, Alberta's acting chief medical officer of
health.

"Cocaine is not a legal product so there's no way we can do a trace to
find out where the contamination might have occurred," Predy said.
"But if you've used cocaine and have signs of an infection--a fever, skin
sores or a bad cough--you should get checked out immediately by your
doctor."

It's fairly common for drugs to be laced with various toxic substances,
Predy said, but this is the first time he's ever come across levamisole
being used for this purpose.

Agranulocytosis, if undiagnosed, can be fatal because it compromises the
ability of the immune system to fend off toxins.

At least one of the reported cases involves a patient from southern Alberta.

BC health officials are warning of contaminated cocaine which has led to

serious illness in at least 10 Vancouver Island and Lower Mainland cases.

The patients suffered from bone marrow suppression and an abnormally low

number of a type of white blood cell, a spokeswoman for the Ministry of

Healthy Living and Sport said.


Health authorities began seeing the cases a few months ago, with the

most recent one reported this month, the spokeswoman said.
Provincial health officer Dr. Perry Kendall said the people who came down

with the conditions used powdered cocaine believed to be from the same

batch sold in the province.


"The drug that is contaminating the cocaine is something called levamisole,

… which suppresses the white cell count and makes them vulnerable to

infections," Kendall said.
He said levamisole is an antibiotic used to rid animals of worms.
People who used powdered cocaine and became ill should see a doctor or

street nurse, he said.
Symptoms include persistent fever and chills, swollen glands, sores in the
mouth or around the anus, skin infections and pneumonia.

SWIM has heard on the grapevine that there is also "BAD COKE" going about
N.Ireland, he tells me he knows of at least two people who have apparently
OD'd on coke. he also told me he has been advised by a few people to be
aware of this bad coke and to only go threw people who can "stand by" there
own coke.

now SWIM knows that most dealers would stand by there own coke even if it
is cut with shit just to get rid of it! bottom line:SWIM will only be getting his
goods from trusted sources and not just any tom, dick or harry.

BE CAREFUL AND WATCH WHAT SWIyou BUYS.

Why not just clean your cocaine? Its quite simple,i bet even a twelve year undereducated american old could handle this one.
