Coming out with your addiction to a Doctor

Greetings chums,

Swim has a friend who is addicted to opiates, street smack-a-doosle and he wants to ask his doctor for help, but DOESN'T at all want to go to a rehabilitation fascility. He is wondering if there is some kind of law of standards that would require this doctor to send swims friend to "Rehab" or if the doctor could simply fill out a perscription and send swims friend on his merry little way...

Anyone?

Turtle

Re: Coming out with your addiction to a Doctor

SWIMs doctor has been helpful giving SWIM a chance to do a Lofexidine detox and a short course (very) short course of methadone detox. Now though evrytime SWIM goes to the doctor everything that SWIM is there for is blamed for her opiate addiction - like depression for instance which SWIM has suffered from since about 11 years old.
TBH SWIM now wishes she hadn't come clean and worries that it will affect her future carrer prospects in the healthcare industry.
Tell SWIM to think about it very seriously weigh up the pros and cons for him.

Re: Coming out with your addiction to a Doctor

swim is already SCREWED

Has come clean before, BUT it was after the detox process a month after the fact.

Swims question now is that if in current throws of addiction can doc let swim swim freely

So what swim is saying is, yes, swim can but swim be screwed, but for swim, swim is already screwed so in this instance it seems Pro's Do out weigh the con. ;0)

something of noteworthity:

THIS swim is swimming in America where laws differ from anywhere else, swim believes.

Re: Coming out with your addiction to a Doctor

Don't !! Swim made that mistake ones and changed Doctors and the file didn't move !
Now he is good with his GP and gets zopiclone and diazepam.. But he knows addicts who get dihydrocodeine, and (more) diazepam then swim gets....

Re: Coming out with your addiction to a Doctor

SWIM just did this with her doctor, and it turned out to be for the best. SWIM has a pain condition which requires pain meds but needs to be closely watched and managed through SWIM's mom controlling the pills. SWIM cannot have pain bottles around because SWIM will go nuts with them because frankly SWIM enjoys the little bastards too much.

BUT - SWIM told me to tell you that SWIY should think VERY carefully about this before doing it. Not every doctor is helpful, and some instantly become "oh well you are experiencing everything because you are an addict" for everytthing, depression, colds, flu, sneezing, allergies, insomnia, everything. SWIM might make an anonymous phone call to the doctors office asking if the doctor has experience in dealing with getting addicts off drugs - dont say who SWIM is but explain what you are looking for and then see what they say. This is a good idea SWIM thinks. Good luck and thoughts whatever SWIM decides to do.

Re: Coming out with your addiction to a Doctor

Swim told her doc that she wanted to get clean and was prescribed methadone pills. It is worth it totally. Tell your friend to do it, but only if the doc is kinda cool, if not then swiy might be screwed over by the doc(some dont want to dirty their hands with addicts). Good luck.

Re: Coming out with your addiction to a Doctor

Swim has always been extremely cautious in telling his doctor anything regarding his drug use (past or present). It seems many doctors there-after are prone to blame any medical conditions on the drug use. And many doctors will also be much less likely to prescribe anything that isn't OTC after coming out with drug use.

Re: Coming out with your addiction to a Doctor

yea, good luck getting any kind of meds after comming clean. Doesn't sound like it's worth it. Just makes more things a hassle, and easy to misdiagnose shit because now everything's because of drugs.

Re: Coming out with your addiction to a Doctor

In Canada, your doc can prescribe stuff for tapering. You can't be forced into rehab except by a court. I doubt it's much different in the US.

If you're concerned about whether he'll prescribe you mind-altering pharmaceuticals in the future if he knows you're an addict, it kind of calls into question your own dedication and reason for asking his help in the first place, don't you think? If you're clean and honest about it with him, and you have a real medical problem, no doctor would blame it on your past drug use unless there was reason to.

Re: Coming out with your addiction to a Doctor

My friend Dave recently came clean with his doc(first real doc visit in over 10 years),and told her the whole sordid tale, leaving nothing out.He thought it was the only way to truly find out how bad he had fucked himself(which turned out to be pretty bad). She had nothing but compassion for Dave and really wants to help him get over this.

It was a hard decision to make and actually go through with, but in hindsight Dave made the right choice. He wasn't looking down the road ,worried about getting drugs in the future,as that would sorta negate the choice he made.

His main concern was dealing with a degenerative back condition, and how it could be dealt with without opiate based drugs in the future.Turns out that there are several new medical options that won't fuck with Daves sobriety(thank goodness).

Good thoughts
