Cross tolerance among Barbiturates and Benzos?
SWIM knos both barbs & benzos act on GABA receptors & is inclined to think that they may exhibit cross tolerance amongst eachother. SWIM specifically read that their is a cross tolerance among phenobarbital & diazepam.
SWIM is interested to kno whether taking 200mg butalbital (100mg & 100mg 3 hours l8r), & 19-20 hours l8r taking 30mg temazepam would exhibit any cross tolerance, considering SWIM has little if any tolerance to butalbital & zero tolerance to any benzos? |

Re: Cross tolerance among Barbiturates and Benzos?
I should imagine so considering they both have rather long half-lives.

Yes, both barbs & benzos do cross-tolerance with each other. If someone has a high tolerance to benzos, they might not feel much effects if they toke a barb - but it they have no tolerance to either, the person would feel very sleepy if using butalbital & temazepam together.

Re: Cross tolerance among Barbiturates and Benzos?
In horrid rehab centers, they give phenobarbital to withdrawing benzo addicts. It may stop a seizure, but it still SUCKS.

Re: Cross tolerance among Barbiturates and Benzos?
Swim is hesistant to believe there is a cross tolerance. Swim recently had a chat w/ their pharmacist about meprobamate and wether or not it would supress withdrawal from benzos. They admittedly were unsure but thought it wouldn't, mep. being closer to barbiturates than benzos. Both benzos and barbs act on GABA, there is a specific benzodiazepine receptor complex in the brain.
Albeit unsure, Swim does not beieve they would exhibit a specific cross tolerance. |

Re: Cross tolerance among Barbiturates and Benzos?
Swim's cat was sure to correct him to his above post. While he cannot post links to Wikipedia, he quickly learned from it that not only is there a cross tolerance between barbiturates and benzodiazepines, but also with alcohol, the so-called "z-drugs" (also known as nonbenzodiazepines such as zolpidem, zopiclone, zaleplon, etc), as well as with corticosteroids.
Swim supposes that his cat's year long Rx for lorazepam 2mg x 3/day may explain why a few beers doesn't set him back as much as in the old days! And the cat thought it to just be age... |

some substances acting at GABA:
- ethanole - valproic acid - barbiturates - GHB (gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid) - benzodiazepines - meprobamate - the "Z"- drugs - flumazenil (BD antagonist) some interesting links: h**p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross_tolerance h**p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma-Hydroxybutyric_acid h**p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GABA_receptor h**p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GABAB_receptor h**p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GABAC_receptor |
