Heroin hidden in Monopoly game in Manitoba’s biggest bust

By Aldo Santin December 19, 2008

WINNIPEG - The RCMP and Canada border agents made the largest heroin bust in Manitoba history after finding two one-kilogram bags hidden inside two boxes of the popular board game Monopoly.

The RCMP said they got involved in the case last week after custom agents opened two courier shipments destined for separate local addresses.

They found two wrapped special Monopoly games packaged in wooden boxes. But instead of Park Avenue, the agents found a one-kilogram bag of heroin inside each box.

It’s believed the heroin has a street value of $250,000.

The RCMP arrested two women from Manitoba and another from Surrey, B.C.

The investigation, which determined that Manitoba was not the intended final destination for the heroin, also led to the discovery of another two kilograms of the drug in the U.S.

Harpreet Kaur Bains, 28, of Surrey was arrested Wednesday in Vancouver and was to be flown back to Winnipeg Friday for a bail hearing.

Also arrested this week were Amanda L. Kububeck, 28, of Winnipeg and Tracy Lynne Pongracz, 29, of Stony Mountain, Man.

All three women face multiple charges, including unlawful possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and conspiracy to import a controlled substance into Canada from the United Kingdom.

Kububeck and Pongracz were released on a promise to appear and are scheduled for a court date in February.
