Marijuana courier jailed for 3 years

A drugs courier who was caught with £238,000 of cannabis by police investigating an accident has been jailed for three years and four months.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that David Findlay, from Cumbernauld, turned to drugs after a series of misfortunes.
He was caught ferrying the cannabis, to pay off a debt, on the A74(M) near Lockerbie in March this year.
Judge Lord Brailsford said he would have jailed Findlay for longer but for his early guilty plea.
The court heard that the 31-year-old's borrowed car was stopped following an accident on the A74 Glasgow to Carlisle road near Lockerbie on 3 March this year.
Police initially thought the vehicle was stolen, but Findlay claimed it was a company car although he did not work for the firm.

Snowboarding accident

Officers checked the boot and discovered three holdalls stuffed full of cannabis.
Hugh Irwin, prosecuting, said the drugs had a potential street value of £238,800.
Findlay later said he had been taking the cannabis to Blackpool and had not been put "under duress".
Joseph Barr, defending, told the court Findlay had gone through "a string of misfortune" - including a snowboarding accident and an assault on him.
Jailing him judge Lord Brailsford said: "I am prepared to accept you suffered a number of unfortunate social circumstances. However it is plain you carried out this offence for financial gain to pay off your drug debt.
"This was a very large quantity of drugs which has the potential to do a considerable amount of harm."
