Question about cotton...and...

Ok so swim has tried this before and failed every time,he usealy gets " cotton fever" or whatever but the question is...
Is there a safe way to use or get out ex-sess dope out of used cottons without getting sick?
Swim has nothing right now and would almost like to try it again but does not want to get that feeling of the sickness ever again,it is one of the worst feelings ever,anyone have any help?
