Re: help stop drinking
SWIM thinks that this may belong in the recovery and addiction forum but he will lay some advice on SWIY anyhow(he knows something of the drink).
Firstly, identify SWIY's triggers(activities and/or thoughts) that bring on the thirst and try to eliminate these things from SWIY's daily life. Take up an activity that SWIY enjoys, such as music, movies, writing, etc (basically anything constructive and positive). Secondly, sometimes the company one keeps has a major say so in drinking. Drinking is a very social activity as are many chemicals. Consider staying away from certain groups or people that engage in binge drinking. It is hard to break from friends but if they can not understand that SWIY needs a break then they are not friends at all. Lastly, if SWIY does stray from the straight and narrow do not beat SWIY up over it...it happens. SWIY is human and as a human SWIY will make mistakes. All do. Just keep SWIY's head up and if SWIY feels that the thirst runs that severe, SWIY could always look into a treatment program. Good luck.Oh, another tip that SWIM has given to others in the same boat...candy. Lots of it! When SWIY finds him/herself with an urge...eat candy. Sugar is SWIY's friend. -Pope Albacore |

Re: help stop drinking
Well there is Antabuse which will make someone sick if they continue to drink and naltrexone is prescribed for alcoholics. Red Rock has found with naltrexone that it doesn't prevent one from getting drunk or make them sick if they drink; however, it completely takes all the pleasure and fun out of drinking. Like someone can still be drunk but it's like what's the point as it's not fun. These are just two medications of the top of my head I can think of but I'm sure there is more.
