How does NMP "denature" GBL?

SWIM once tried(many stupid moons ago) GBL containing NMP, there were no bad effects but there were no good effects either!

Exactly how does the NMP negate the activity of GBL in the body?

Google has been of no help on this, not one reference can be found.
