Ritalin contains the following inactive ingredients: Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose 2208 USP, Magnesium Stearate NF, Microcrystalline Cellulose NF, and Talc USP.

Information

Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose –
• slightly soluble in coldwater
• Insoluble in ethanol
• Insoluble in warm water

Talc USP
• Insoluble in water
• Insoluble in ethanol

Magnesium Stearate
• Insoluble in water

Microcrystalline Cellulose NF
• Insoluble in water

Cleaning

You can clean out the Methylphenidate HCl out of the pills by just doing a HWE (Hot Water Extraction). Or by dissolving it in isopropyl alcohol or ethanol (also called ethyl alcohol, pure alcohol). Then just filter it and let the solution (be it the alcohol type or the HWE) evaporate.

So 5 simple steps

1) Crush pills to a fine powder.
2) To this powder add your type alcohol. Or hot destilled water (about 60° C)
3) Let it dissolve.
4) Filter until very clear. (Use a chemical grade filter or coffe filter)
5) Let the liquid dry on a shallow pyrex baking dish and wait for the liquid to be evaporated.

Now the absolute best way

You just simply do a HWE, so you have a H2O-Methylphenidate HCl solution. You put this solution in a nasal spray container. And it works perfectly.

3 Notes

1) This method only works with the 10mg pills, it does not work with any extended release types, and it also doesn't work with concerta
2) If you don't plan to use a nasal spray container, it is best to use one of the alcohol types, since they evaporate quicker.

This is a great picture and offers a lot of great tips for the process.

SWIM just experimented with ritalin for the first time this past weekend and found it to be an enjoyable and constructive endeavor.

SWIM is very interested in creating socially acceptable forms of administration - blowing a rail of crushed pill is NOT something that co-workers approve of (that, or they want in on the action).

SWIM thinks he needs to do a little math. The nasal-spray bottle he has is for an OTC cold medicine and says it contains 1oz. He doesn't see anywhere that says how much liquid is expelled with each spray.

So the unknowns for SWIM right now are:

How much ritalin will dissolve in 1oz of water before saturation is reached?
How many sprays does 1oz. provide given a standardized OTC sprayer?
How many sprays would then equal one 10mg pill - assuming the solution is near-saturation?
How long will ritalin remain viable in aqueous solution and would the addition of alcohol or something else help preserve the potency?

If it takes 40 sprays to get to 10mg - it's probably not worth doing.

Nasal sprays containing corticosteroids for hayfever typically have around 200 sprays' worth of liquid in them, at least in Ireland anyway. It should give a total number on the box, spray bottle or supplied leaflet. Then it's just a case of doing some simple division.

Now SWIY has to do his own math SWIM doesn't even know what 1oz is.

To know how much liquid is expelled, try this:
Fill the bottle with 2ml of water, then count how many times one must spray untill the container is empty. Do this 2 times, take the average and just devide this: 2ml/x times
This is how many ml is expelled with each spray.

So for 2ml of water SWIM suggest using about 4 pills, that would do the trick for one night.

And if SWIY has doubts about this method, try with 2 pills and 2ml water for starters.

Great info - great english - no need for apologies anywhere.

So:
190mg per ml will dissolve in water.

One fluid oz is 29.5ml.

Some standard OTC sprayers give about 200 sprays for 2oz or 100sprays/oz.

If 100 sprays = 29ml then one spray should equal about .29ml - so assuming a little bit of loss, etc., Each spray is a 1/4 ml.

Ideally, it would be helpful to calibrate the dose to a standard amount that allows for easy incremental administration that is neither overwhelming nor insignificant. Say one spray = 5mg.

So the goal to dissolve 20mg per ml. 2 pills per ml. This number is FAR within the range of solubility/saturation - so there's no fear of losing product to temp-changes (other than extreme changes which would probably effect the chemical anyway).


Thoughts from people with better scientific backgrounds than SWIM's would be greatly appreciated. Would adding alcohol help preserve the solution? Would it help the transfer through the mucus membrane? Would adding a little bit of salt help?

OK - SWIM has experimented with this a little now.

First - he got a clean pump-mist bottle and measured the number of sprays per ml. It came out to 20 sprays per ml. That means with two 10mg pills, each spray would be approx. 1mg ritalin.

He found a glass eye-dropper at his local drugstore that was calibrated to 1ml of water.

Next, he ground up two 10mg pills and mixed the powder with 1ml of warm water. He doesn't have test tubes so he used a round bottomed shot glass. He let the solution sit for a few minutes to let the binder settle.

He then used the dropper to carefully siphon off most of the water. Truth be told, he's not sure how effective this is, it seems like using a filter of some sort might be the better way to go because the powder in the bottom was still pretty water-logged.

The real trouble came with administering the sprays. Spraying into thin air - it's easy to see that the full spray has been deployed. When the nozzle is in the nostril though - it felt like nothing was coming out. IN part, SWIM suspects that since some of the powder/binder got sucked into the eyedropper, the pump action was a little clogged/blocked and not as clean.

SWIM ended up deploying the entire ml instead of the intended 10 pumps, because he was unsure of how many pumps were sucessfull.

Initial impressions? Compared to insufflating a line of crushed pill - the drip is WAY worse.

At T+5min - SWIM definitely feels it.

This is a success.

SWIM has some concerns tho -

1. how well does the solution store? This seems like a pain in the ass process, compared to crushing a pill with a spoon - but the covert benefits are really intriguing.

2. is there anything else SWIM can add to the solution to make it easier on the sinuses - his nose feels pretty raw.

SWIM only has about 15 more 10mg pills. This is a unique solution for going out - but he's not sure that it's worth the hassle unless the process can be refined a little more.


T+ 15min - yeah it's def. effective.

Yes - it's stealth - yes - it's convenient and cleaner than snorting the binder.

But carrying one or two pills around isn't all that conspicuous given tha SWIM is an adult - and crushing a pill and doing the to rails that result isn't all that time consuming. SWIM doesn't think the binders have any adverse affects.

This method works - 100% - but for SWIM - it's overkill.

Swim spends about 10 minutes crushing up his daily dose with his mortar and pestle or mortar and screw driver handle should he say. With this method you just spend about an hour filling up nasal sprays and it would probably save time in the long run. This method is perfect for swim because he often gets these eyeball aches after snorting big piles of powder then having to snort half a bottle of water to get it all in there. So methylphenidates fairly soluble in hot water?

A mortar and pestle is conspicuous. Two metal spoons? not conspicous at all. The bowls of the spoons fit together and it's as easy as putting the pill in the bowl of one spoon and then crushing the pill with the back of the other spoon. The spoons SWIM has have fairly deep bowls.

Methylphenidates are very very soluble in room temp water - no need to heat it up.

SWIM's biggest concern with this tek is the shelf-life of the solution.

The character in the story I'm writing just carries a pill crusher with her, which she got at a pharmacy for like $10, and pill crushers are legitimate things to use, and can be explained away by the fact that a person gets frequent tonsilitis and finds it painful to swallow tablets.
Easier to explain than a mortar and pestle for sure, and probably much more portable.
And because the place where one crushes the pills is on the inside of the plastic container, one doesn't need to worry about trying to keep it clean when carrying it around in a bag like you might have to with spoons. Also preferable to spoons because it is less likely that the pieces of crushed pill won't get lost as easily. My character found that when she tried crushing with a spoon, she always accidentally dropped bits out the side. A waste of medicine and powder to clean up/explain.
It's also extremely quick and easy, one just drops in the pills, screws the lid on and off a few times, and gets a really fine powder in less than a minute. One could even possibly pre-crush the pills and leave them in the crusher because the lid just screws on and would keep the powder safe.
Her pill crusher also has a container at the bottom that could be used to store pills or spare straws or whatever.
She thinks it was a great investment.
If someone was to be a fan of crushing more than one type of pill though, it would probably be smart to rinse the crusher before and after every use so that one could be sure of exactly what the powder contained...
