SWIM has noticed that when drinks (around 0,4 litres of 40% alcohol if we sum it up) he will round up with a nasty hangover despite all remedies taken to prevent that (a lot of water, some vitamin suplements). Also he can be very anxious and/or depressed the other day or two. So drinking nights have become really unenjoyable..
![]() The last time (today) that he visited his doctor (because of sore throat, doesnt matter) she reminded him that he suffers from Gilbert's Syndrome.(SWIM had a blood screening earlier this year, but his doctor didn't emphasize this so he completly forgot about it). SWIM came home and made some research about this "syndrome" and one of the symptoms can be very strong hangovers, depression, anxiety etc. So SWIM's question is... does anybody else suffer from this syndrome? How strong do you have it? How do you cope with it? And the MAIN question - can you advice SWIM some kind of alcohol that could possibly go well with his syndrome and don't make his hangovers so bad so he could enjoy New Year's drinking etc once again? thx |

Re: Gilbert's syndrome/hangovers
SWIM has this syndrome as well, but doesn't get actual hangovers very often from drinking in excess. Rather, they tend to get real sloppy after ~0.5 liters of a 40% drink. The next day SWIM lacks a hangover regardless of how rough the previous night was.
As for the severity of the syndrome in SWIM, they get noticeably yellow when under duress/dehydrated (esp. at the end of a rough night of drinking) and SWIM has said that their doctor has yet to say anything about alcohol and GS , despite knowledge of tendency to drink (excepting the usual warnings). SWIM doesn't suffer from depression or anxiety as SWIY mentioned. For a look at other GS-sufferers' symptoms, look here (http://www.gilbertssyndrome.com/index.php) at the GS Symptoms link. SWIM recommends that SWIY remember that GS-sufferer's actually have more bilirubin than non-GS'ers, so perhaps SWIY and SWIM are superior?

Re: Gilbert's syndrome/hangovers
SWIM has the syndrome (discovered after having A LOT of blood tests and thinking that he had ruined his liver), and he very rarely gets hangovers, and never anything that bad. On the occasion when SWIM reached his most drunk (a very foolish night), he was so drunk that he forgot how to speak at one point, and got chased up 4 flights of stairs by a hotel worker when asked what room he was in because he didn't know how to respond (SWIM will never repeat this pathetic night). Anyway, he happily woke up early the next day so he could have a hotel breakfast, with no hangover whatsoever.
There are a lot of Gilberts Syndrome webstes with big lists of symptoms, but none are recognised by actual doctors, so SWIM is unsure what to believe. SWIM does have excessive thirst and tiredness though, which are some of the symptoms listed on the unnofficial websites. Last edited by honourableone; 20-04-2009 at 17:56.
