My friend's friend really enjoys Kratom. He's been able to consistently achieve long-lasting, sedative, euphoric, relaxing, warm, comfortable, and cozy highs with only 5 grams of the cheapo Bali stuff (in fact, the more expensive strains and extracts, Maeng Da included, barely do anything for him), and does not seem to be developing a tolerance for it (he is using it only occasionally). He loves drinking grapefruit juice before consuming it, as it potentiates and prolongs the high.
Unfortunately, however, although he was able to tolerate powdered Kratom in water the first few times he tried it, he is now no longer able to do so, whether the mixture is heavily sweetened or not. The barest taste or smell of Kratom now nearly induces a gag reflex in him.
He's been using the capsules, but he had a particularly bad experience a few days ago. He ingested, on an empty stomach, more Kratom than usual, and was overcome with brutally intense nausea. (The high was also quite intense, but it was obviously difficult for him to appreciate it.) He learned the hard way that walking from building to building on campus makes the nausea even worse, and he will no longer use Kratom during class time. (He almost vomited in a bathroom stall and nearly missed a lecture session.)
Thanks to that experience, he is developing an increasingly strong aversion to the Kratom capsules. He has not felt much nausea since the experience described above, but sometimes gags while trying to swallow the pills. He knows that particularly emetic substances can create a powerful Pavlovian "
food aversion" and hopes that the aversion is not generalized to all pills (which would certainly be a bad thing).
Do you have any advice for him as to how to break the response?
